Evening All,

With the fixtures coming out on Wednesday, I am thinking of offering my services on tips and heads up for train tickets for any awaydays.

Would anybody be interested?

Roger

Ian, just advice, heads up on deals 12 weeks in advance etc, using local ticket deals rather than the national rail etc/ advice on splitting tickets for one journey to make it cheaper.

Also when the dates come in tomorrow, then i will have the diary to work with for long away trips etc.

also make it interactive if someone knows another deal then more the merrier.

Just passing my knowledge of ticketing on, especially as i have been a rail enthusiast for 38 years.

QPR and Brighton, too, please, but just from Leicester for those two (I work all over at mo).

p.s. Always been confused about rail cards and discounts.

what should I be looking to get?

Ian: Leicester appears to be the fares Wormhole, nothing seems to be working in regard to split tickets and even went around the corner to start your journey at Hinkley, but obviously getting on at leicester, but EMT have it sewn up im afraid.

London Midland and Virgin on the West coast (Nuneaton) offer better fares, because there is competition into London, Into St Pancras there is only EMT, which is why they can do what they want.

But i am not defeated, you can still make some savings, but the risk is that you have to travel on an advance fare and thats ok if you give yourself enough time getting back from QPR. Advance fares have to be used on the train specified on your tickets.

The Full fare is £59.00 !!!!
Advance fare is £44.00 get into Pancras at 12pm (Good time) but return at 19:58 from St Pancras.

Railcards are also quite easy to understand, if you regularly travel with a mate, go and get a two together railcard, as long as you travel together then you both get 33% off the fares above, yes even the advance fares.

Unfortunately there is nothing for us folk on our own between 25 to 59.

Brighton Rail tickets: would you still be going as its an evening kick off, Let me know as i know Southern are quite competitive.

Great info-thanks Worecestemiller.

So, if Ive read this correctly, a person who is travelling alone btw ages 25-59 gets no discount, but 2 persons travelling together would get a 33% discount each?

Departing from Nuneaton is certainly a possibility if the saving was at lease £5 each.

Re: the Fulham game on the 28th December, are there usually reduced services that would pose a problem on the return leg?

Re: Brighton, would def still prefer train as usually take the day off and take last train back.

Ian, yep thats right, if you and your mate get a two together railcard, need passport photos though, pay £30 (£15 each) and every time you travel together you get the discount of 33%, so base this on your £59 Day Return no restrictions ticket to QPR then you will save £19.47 reducing it to 39.53!!! yes initial outlay but if you get the £44 advance ticket then its only £29.48.

Swings and roundabouts initially, but in the long run it will save you loads a money and keeps the cost down.

The railcard combination could be any two people as long as they travel together - you dont even have to be related.

Later today i will post a list of dates for your diaries in regard to the 12 weeks advance fares, this will help out in regard to future away dates.

Also i will look at the Nuneaton later for you as well. Cheaper travel is with London Midland of course.

Ian,

Couldnt resist, Nuneaton is the better option, so see my findings below:

£17.50 EACH !!!! yes thats the price for advance fares at the moment from Nuneaton travelling on the 09:05 getting into Euston at 10, so 5 hrs of drinking!!

then if sober catch the 18:53 back into Nuneaton at 19:53.

Also if you were to get a railcard then the price would be £11.73 !!!!

Day Return ticket (no restrictions is only £42.60) so still cheaper than Leicester, Railcard price would be £28.55!!

AND GET THIS   A First Class Advance is only £32 return , £21.10 each with the railcard !!!!

So go get a railcard and start bagging the bargains!!!

CHARLTON
Thanks for the tip Worcester Miller. Don't usually bother with trains but will consider at that price. Gonna have a look. Cheaper than diesel for the car that...just. Thinking of combining Charlton & Brighton (following Tues) so might take car. Can you get open returns cheap ?

I find trains such a hassle. Even finding tickets at decent price is so chuffin complicated and time consuming. That's why I don't even bother looking at the option, unless its a local game. I hate queues and I hate hassle & unnecessary hassle ! one of my many weaknesses ..... is patience ! Lack of....., when it comes to admin / silly rules / exploitative convoluted procedures for profit. GRRRRR !

MASSIVE help this by the way Worcester, massive, Cheers
