Both were disappointments in so far as Newton seems a confident lad and Loach showed a good attitude and had some pedigree.
Ultimately though both have come up short.
Newton just hasnt looked the part at this level and hasnt taken his chances in the team. He doesnt seem to have the cutting edge in terms of defensive or attacking options.
Poor Loach has fallen from dizzy heights and although we havent seen much of him to judge it looks like he will spend most of his time around league 1 and 2 currently.
Its relatively easy to spot potential. The tricky players are the Paul Taylor of this world. He has every attribute but needs the right players and system around him plus the ability to make decisions.
Milsom is clearly a good footballer but he just isnt quite good enough to force himself into a championship team due to pace and strength.
Pringle is another who makes it difficult at times to judge him due to consistency (not always his fault)
JCH has potential but I dont think he will make it at this level.
Bowery I think can make the transition.
Its pretty obvious to me that the players we let go simply aren't good enough. The age of a player makes a difference at times and there are some late bloomers but they are the exception and its impossible to pick them out because it tends to be about a change in speed and mental maturity and/or a positional change.
its about the level a club is at and after watching a season of championship football I would say only Derbyshire, Ward and smallwood-with Arnie just needing to find 10% more consistency - are nailed on championship performers from our current permanent squad.

Agree with most of that apart from JCH he'll make it at this level if he's given the chance with us or with somebody else. Bowery can go, got no physical presence.
There's only one Steve Evans got it right with Loach & Newton, not going to be included next season. Best manager in S Yorks. 2 seasons running he's got quality loan players in.
