If, & its a big If we stay in the Championship after this season, I fear we could become next seasons Blackpool. I agree with the current wage structure, even if it does eventually relegate us, as we can't put the future of our club at risk by trying to recruit players on silly money to keep us in this league but surely TS has to explore other ways of bringing money into the club to enable the club to compete in this division.
At NYS, it seems to me that we have a large amount of potential retail outlets dotted around the perimiter that are just not utilised. Using Derby's IPro stadium as an example, there seems to be a thriving cafe/coffee shop, more than one supporters bar, a branch of Greggs etc, etc, why not us? IMO retail opportunities are being missed here, I'm sure most Millers fans would welcome a supporters club/bar at the ground, or would that be treading on the toes of the stadium catering company?
A number of points need to be made about the potential retail outlets at New York Stadium. Nothing will happen with these until the Guest and Chrimes building situation is sorted out. If Tony Stewart's plans for the site could be realised I.e. Hotel on the site and a retail park, then the retail outlets at the Stadium become an attractive viable proposition to the business community. Remember these retail outlets have to be viable 7 days a week not just on match days. It is true to say that some outlets would tred on the toes of the current catering company, but it was good business to extend their contract whilever the present impasse 're the Guest and Chrimes building continues. This is holding up progress as I am sure Tony Stewart understands only too well. But in Tony we trust.
A lot of fans, especially those that have rejoined the band wagon or new fans since NYS went up - need a big dose of reality check. Yes the outlying buildings & internal units need sorting but I'm sure TS knows this, he's not one to let a potentially lucrative revenue stream sit idle for longer than necessary is he.
We are never going to even compete in this league until those things are resolved, earning us cash - and NYS has at least the away end extended and possibly all of it to the tune of getting 15-16k in every home game. We should be under no illusion either that - that is what it will take, and until then we'll be the potential whipping boys.
If we stay up, next season will be even more difficult, those coming up from L1 will have a belief of holding their own in this league, and those coming down will not plummet like Wigan have done.
But that is not to say we should give up. I think the feeling this season is that yes 4th from bottom was always the goal, to pick our battles etc, but we've not made it easy for ourselves have we - due to managerial short comings mostly. The big mess of the squad and loans, the many dropped points against Cardiff, Brighton, Blackpool twice, Huddersfield, Birmingham & Fulham & throw in the games like Charlton et al where the referee had more than an influence on the game not giving us what was according to the rules, and dare I say it the games we got utterly battered against Wolves at home and Bournemouth away but we stole points - ac***ulatively stack up.
I firmly believe we won't go down. But because we are failing to learn our lessons you can guarantee the 4 wins from Cardiff, Wigan, Brighton & Millwall we need to virtually guarantee us a stay of execution in this league will not materialise. And we'll put undue pressure on ourselves to need to pick up points elsewhere that we by the bookies wouldn't be entitled to - but that's Rotherham United isn't it?
For what it's worth I think by the time we play Norwich at home I think we'll be safe. Unlike previous summer's Evans (if he doesn't go to Pboro) will need to be far more astute in his summer signings than he has been since his first post Andy Scott clear out if we are to even have a chance next season.
G&C needs to go asap its holding everything up. Without the footfall from other businesses then the retail units wont be an attractive place to do business from. FDevelop the land and then we may see the units being let. I'd have thought a Gym would have been an ideal fit for one of the units, depends on unit size i suppose.
The sad and depressing factor of trying to survive in the championship on a shoestring budget, (In terms of competition)
Big Bucks is the key to establishing a strong foothold and regular place In this division, and to do that one of the things we are going to have to do is establish some sort of growth industry, whether it be retail, catering and hospitality, etc
Someone pointed out the vacant units, and they should be turned into profit sensible profit making schemes.
Surviving this season should make it easier to build what is necessary to survive again. But as has been said before, the teams coming down from the Prem and winning promotion from L1 will be stronger and have better resources than the Millers which will make it an even harder task to compete on the field.
The way to compete is to build a team of battlers, with great team spirrit, a willingness to fight for each other and never give up. A belief from the players that they can get results at this level, just like the Days of Ronnie in the Championship with players he had like Swailes, Macintosh etc.
We need that Team spirrit and togetherness to overcome the "Big Boys" and make it that they dont look forward to playing the Millers. We need to recruit winners and players with the right attitude who have the qualities to perform as above.
We will have to cut our cloth accordingly but we haave to be wise in our recruitment and make our £ go further.
