Molineux - The Novelty has worn off

OK, I'm going to make some comparisons from 9 months ago, that's bound to happen.

1. Much easier getting to J28, parked right next to the ground and was away in minutes, last time we know what J28 was, in the 'secure parking' my windscreen got cracked and ended up being much further from the ground than envisaged.

2. The weather gorgeous last time, my knees got burnt in the sun, this time a horrible cold wind with heavy pulses of hail.

3. Interesting that 10,000 plastics failed to show for this one.  In fact that's an interesting number, that's the entire size of our fan base, kinda shows what we're really up against what is a 2/3, bottom 1/3 split of the Championship

Right enough of what was different.

The same, and I do question SE with this one, he learnt nothing, absolutely nothing from last time. Wolves are quite happy to let you have the ball, in fact they want you to have it.  Their game is based on nicking the ball and counter attacking, and their pace (as we know) is blistering.  Not only that they make meaningful crafted quality chances that are intended.  SE didn't know this by the looks, he also failed to address the warning after 2 minutes that they'd done a number on us, and were getting balls in and behind our full backs, who of which Fryars, Hammil & then Ward in the 2nd half had a nightmare against Iorfa the big 6'6 attacking right back of Wolves.  And I won't even mention Sako, Dickho & Afobe.  We were ripped to shreds last time where Wolves could have scored 10, against that pace again we had no answer to deal with it - Why?

The scoreline would suggest we got battered.  No we didn't.  We didn't sit back we went for it, and my oh my, but for 2 worldies from their keeper and a hat full of very good chances being missed if it had ended a repeat 6-4 nobody would have been surprised.  I'm glad we are now going for it, games like this are a one off, we won't come up against anything like that again this season, and we certainly won't miss so many chances.  Likewise a corner taker will not score against us direct from the kick for what oh another 30 years!? - Joe Skarz wouldn't have been so forgiving than Fryars,  Agard & Revell would have scored, and Tavs would have scared them to death.  If ever there was an argument that we are a worse team now than 9 months ago - this settled it for me.

I can't fault the application, our sole priorities should always be of those around the bottom 10, if we year on year get the better of that group we'll not go down (and I don't believe we'll go down this season).

What does need to change, is that today a Championship quality coach, came up against a non league one - and that REALLY concerns me.  I haven't listened to the after match speech, but I'm sure it'll be the same dribble.  The players put it in today and we should have scored at least 3, 2 of which would have been at extremely game changing times.  But if our coaching team can't begin to recognise what other teams possess and how we stop it, then we're always going to make things harder for ourselves when they really don't have to be.

It's a good post ex and some interesting points.

I always feared a drubbing at wolves based on both games last year. As you say the pace they have and the direct counter attacking just doesn't suit us unless we sit very deep and play it long.

We need some genuine pace and skill down the sides and in the middle but it is difficult to acquire at this level.

It's difficult to know what to do with this kind of opposition.

I don't know how to rate the tactical performance of the team today but like you said we could have had two or three.

Maybe José who let's face it is a tactical genius would have played a more conservative set up today and gone for the point.

I particularly thought your observation about the 'lack of home support' was interesting. Excitement seems to be more compelling than playing at a higher level?

I thought we would be a lot tighter to break down when I saw Milsom on the team sheet.  I thought we would be harder to break down, guess I was wrong on that one cry
