Car Number Plates and Show Plates

I've been reading up on private car number plates. Such plates have got to be legal and properly made up. Jimmy Tarbuck used to have a plate COM 1C on his Rolls Royce  if  I remember correctly. There was COM then a space and the 1C and not

COM1C. The latter is obviously not allowed. Failure to comply to the legal requirements leads to the registered keeper having his or her collar felt by the long arm of the law.

Why does this law not apply in South Yorkshire? I have seen several cars on the road  which are displaying number plates which do not comply with the regulations.

So if I wanted to buy a personalised number plate would I get away with a plate such as AND1Y rather than AND 1Y?

Your thoughts please.

The tax payer makes a $h1t load of cash out of people willing to spends tens of thousands on personal car number plates and yet we waste our police resources trying to enforce spacing and such. Why not allow people to register (for a fee) what ever they bloody like, as long as it's unique what is the problem? If that is the way folks want to spend their money, let them and let the tax payer benefit.

I think you might be able to wrangle it if you were prepared for the hassle should you get pulled. If it meant a solicitor and court and having a false number plate or two to cover your tracks and say hey! Look not too close at all-Totally legit. How important is it to you?

Thanks, guys. I'll just have to give it more thought when it comes to buying a personalized number plate.

Isn't it to do with camera recognition ? - could be wrong, won't the software be geared up to read format's - if it was a free for all how could you tell that COM1C was different to COM 1C ?

My point is, why can't I just register COM1C as my number plate and pay the Government (tax payer) a huge fee.  I understand that funky fonts might be an issue for ANPR but if we allowed people top register a unique set of numbers and letters of their choice it could be a huge money spinner.

I think the plate AND 1Y has already been taken. So, for the time being I'm not gonna pursue a private plate.   But then again I can never say never. smile
