The ubiquitous end of year "best of" thread.

OK so what is your top 10 best albums of the year?  Or the ones that have seen heavy rotation on your ipod, Spotify account or if you're old school your turntable?  Rules are it has to be an album with a release date in 2014.  Secretly I'd like to find something I've not heard this year that might be good.

I'll get started here's mine.  It's a bit of an odd mix of North American indie, a couple of more mainstream picks and a UK band with huge potential.  Maybe there's something here you haven't heard, who knows you may even like some of this.

10. Woods - With Light and With Love.  [Folk Rock] Will you like it? Listen to: With Light and With Love

9. Kishi Bashi - Lighght [Art Pop, Psychedelic Pop] Will you like it? Listen to: Carry on Phenomenon

8. The Men - Tomorrow's H its [Indie Rock]  Will you like it? Listen to: Different Days

7. Joyce Manor - Never Hungover Again [Pop Punk, Indie Rock] Will you like it? Listen to: Victoria

6. Spoon - They Want My Soul [Indie Rock] Will you like it? Listen to: Inside Out

5. Real Estate - Atlas [Jangle Pop] Will you like it? Listen to: Had to Hear

4. The War on Drugs - Lost in a Dream [Heartland Rock, Indie Rock]  Will you like it? Listen to: Red Eyes

3. Happyness - Weird Little Birthday [Indie Rock]  Will you like it? Listen to: Anything I do is Alright

2. St. Vincent - St. Vincent [Art Pop] Will you like it? Listen to: Digital Witness

1. The New P ornographers - Brill Bruisers [Power Pop] Will you like it? Listen to: War on the East Coast

Some titles I have had to edit (put spaces in) due to this sites overly cautious language filter

Just 4 from me. I don't get the time and i ain't got the passion I once had.

I picked 2 from the mainstream and 2 slightly of a more unusual bent.

manics as refreshing as ever and I like me music idealistic.

petty - i just like his voice and he has some fresh things to say here.

movement is just a lovely album full of sweet talent.

thumscrew is very cool and will last for a long time in the heart and mind not to mention the neuro chemistry of the body.

I'll check out your top 1 or 2 S8.

Hypnotic eye - Tom Petty.
Futurology - manics.
Movement-gerardo frisina.
thumscrew - thumscrew.

new ****ographers: nice stuff but didnt get hold of me on first listening-a tad predictable?

st vincent: like that a bit better-nice one.

happyness-i wanted to like this. its got some nice melody.

war on drugs: 80s ambient new romantic sound. interesting-i think i could like them. makes me want to take drugs.

real estate: nice clean sound. a bit 60s/70s flower power derivative and stone roses. nice.

spoon: oh yes! sent tingles down my spine and then had my attention.

joyce manor: decided to listen to quite a few tunes, so must have something.

the men: not for me.

kishi bashi: reminded me of emerson lake and palmer/barclay james harvest-super group-big band status. kinda nice.

woods: psychedelic man!

nice selection there s8. Had a good time listening to them all. has really helped my education. will look to download a couple of them.

looks like it's just me and you on this thread Ian, I thought there were more musos on here. Oh well

Could only find a couple of tracks by Thumbscrew on youtube and nothing on Spotify so pretty obscure and although jazz really isn't my thing I did quite like Gerardo Frisina a nice latin vibe going on in Movement that was quite moreish.

Tom Petty of course more well known. As a huge admirer of Jeff Lynne (hence The New ****ographers) I preferred the albums that Jeff co wrote and produced. But the new album is very strong, liked it a lot and of course he's now riding on the wave of the heartland rock revival that's going on at the moment.

The Manics are another band I've neglected for a while so was nice to get to listen to Futurology it's not an album to change the world but it was ok.

Stick with Happyness nice to see promising British talent coming through, they remind me of several of my favourite bands; Yo La Tengo, Apples in Stereo and Pavement I was very excited when I first heard Weird Little Birthday.

This is a good, if tough question.

I'd go for:

Atomos by A Winged Victory For The Sullen
Pop Ambient 2015, a compilation on Germany's Kompakt label
C Batter C by The Orb
How We Used To Live Soundtrack by Saint Etienne
The Violet Flame by Erasure
Weightless by Marconi Union
4 by Boozoo Bajou
Sea Island by Loscil
A Long Way To Fall by Ulrich Schnauss
Frank Eddie by Frank Eddie

Currently working my way through that lot Pod, although not normally a fan of ambient the Atomos piece feels like a grower so I will persist.

I'm currently returning the gesture S8 and I'm quietly impressed with the St. Vincent and Kishi Bashi stuff, it's really good. I'm a fan of ambient music and I'm currently listening to an album called 'Carte De Visite' by Stars Of The Lid. It's compelling and moving drone and ambient. It includes a tribute to the late John Peel, a link to this is here as a taster:
