It looks that way.
Taking a step back, Warne can't take us any further because we just haven't got the financial muscle needed. Derby on the other hand are at a low point and have massive potential relative to where they currently are.
Plus they will be paying him 4 or 5 times what we do.
Warne's stock is high right now. Some fans will call him disloyal but many of them will be the same fans who gave him abuse and called for his sacking every time we lost a couple of games in a row. If he turned this down he could very soon find himself unemployed and massively regretting not taking the opportunity when it came along.
We were a bad joke when Warne took over and he leaves with us in the best shape on and off the pitch we have ever been in. Huge respect for the man.
It's a sad day but it's not the end of the world. The six years he's managed us have been one long rollercoaster ride and, in relative terms, have been fabulous to be part of. As a manager he's improved dramatically and it will be interesting to see how he copes with a bigger club and with players who won't fit in with his good human being philosophy. I wish him well and I will particularly miss his wonderful communication skills. As for RUFC, we now need to attract someone who has the skills and personality to continue to get the most out of the current squad but who has the ambition and reputation that will attract a couple of attacking gems who will help raise us to a greater level - they don't have to be good humans! Thanks for the ride Warnie - it's been a blast!
Paul Warne won’t be afforded anywhere near the time and patience he received with us at Derby. The bank account will look healthy, but only for 12-18 months max.
There has often been criticism from fans that we have a poor following for a town our size followed by debate as to why. Some blame apathy others our close proximity to the Sheffield clubs. For me I put it down to expectation that is often offered but never really delivered and the current situation is a case in point. I have been aware of this phenomena since the end of the 1980/81 season when even before the celebrations had died down our then manager, Ian Porterfield was poached by the Blades. A different time, different people, different club but the result is always the same. Just when things start going our way the rug is pulled from under our feet. For once the long haul to build a reputation and stability on and off the pitch has taken 6 tough years and boom here we go again. Forever the bridesmaid never the bride. We have to become established in the Championship before TS is willing to put in significant finance. Understandable, but in my opinion at what cost. The punters have been here before and last night's breaking news only serves to set the cynicism in stone. I don't blame anyone for moving on to bigger things, but let's just hope TS and the board can coax a new managerial team to take up the baton, put a wedge in and get us to that mid table Elderado.
Bit of a crossroads for the club. What does TS want from this venture ?
There needs to be more structure to the club so when something like this happens it doesn't cause a mass panic. There are far too many involved in the day to day footballing operations that are close to being out of contract which will likely cost the clubs millions to replace. Millions we either wont spend or cant afford.
A sad day for the club imo. This was a man who has managed with his hands tied behind his back. Having to find gems in the dirt and compete with clubs who have much more clout. Our club is in a good shape,in some areas . Doing well in the championhip , no real financial worries and a stable club. However, on the other side of the coin,we have lots of players coming to the end of their contracts, a club unable/unwilling to go the extra mile and get in the game changers in the final third. Now Warne has gone which manager would come to us knowing you are managing on a shoestring compared to others in the same division ?
In the Middlesbrough post (last paragraph) i stated i hoped Warne would stay with us. Somebody close to the club had indicated to us that Warne was finding managing Rotherham increasingly difficult. He had taken the moves of Smith and Ihiekwe to our near rivals hard. He felt that if a promoted club didn't have the clout to hold on to some of their best players and lose them to a side in the division below then it might be time to look elsewhere. I also think Derby had been looking to get Warne since the summer and once the takeover was completed the inevitable would happen.
I wish Paul Warne all the best whatever he does. A fine human being, tremendous communicator, great motivator, genuine, caring and our club has lost it's greatest possession.
According to our old mate gru this six years of Warne in charge that started off with us being a laughing stock who couldnt attract or keep an experienced manager, finished with us eighth in the Championship and highly respected in the football world, featured three promotions, two near miss attempts to stay in the Championship, two last game deciders (Gillingham and Cardiff), two Wembley wins including a cup win and all spanning the horrendous difficulties posed by Covid has been the dullest six years he can remember! He must have a short memory. Anyway, back to the real world. Warne leaving was to be expected. Smaller clubs lose successful players and managers to larger clubs. It has always been that way. Graham Potter got Brighton into the top six of the Premier League and he left them for Chelsea. A similar situation in many ways. If Warne does as well for Derby as he did for us, Derby will lose him to someone bigger then them. I hope that TS resists the temptation to go for a Warnock or Evans type and that uppermost in his thoughts is to get someone who is not only a talented coach but also someone who can keep us on the path that Warne has put us on - someone young and hungry with a similar ethos. Not sure who that might be, but they would be my guiding principles.

Mark Bonner seems to be a popular fancy fancy but i believe there may not be many credible potential managers out there willing to work for this chairman. Told the "special relationship" with Warne was a myth and that he would have gone earlier if the Derby takeover had been properly completed.Absolutely gutted. We have lost the best manager the club has ever had and he will be irreplaceable. Wouldn't mind prising Yorkshireman Stuart Gray from Fulham to bring some stability but doubt we could afford him. Half hoping the American investors come back with an offer Mr Stewart will accept. Not sure how the players will react to this-could be transfer requests going in soon. There's a lot of gloom amongst supporters.
I really hope Rob Scott is heavily involved in the interview process along with maybe an opinion from someone like Warnock because listening to TS last night on Radio Sheffield i have no idea which way this is going to go.
Listened to Rob Scott on official site I feel somewhat reassured sounds like he’s got a bit of input re the new appointment he’s staying and is happy here so that’s something!
As regards Warney where do I start? Fantastic manager and even better person great man manager which player wouldn’t want to play for him I’m absolutely gutted but at the same time he deserves it Players managers come and go fans are the constant and all we can do is support the club
Rob Scott should have been on Radio Sheffield instead of TS. Appreciate we get an owner who wants to come and talk (how many times do blades or owls hear from Chansiri or the prince?) but he just muddles things as he isn't a great communicator.
Few local journalists touting Dean Holden. Gut feeling be a no for me to that one.
