Or as David Coleman put it Smiler 'If it had gone in the net, it would have been a goal'!

Imagine having such a magnificent goal difference without a recognised striker in the starting line-up!

I think Washington would argue he is a recognised striker Glenn, but I know what you mean. I love Kelly but having Eaves available will give us something extra. What to do with Ogbene is the difficult one for me. In my opinion he cant play wing back in the Championship and we dont play wingers. So he plays as a forward or (controversially) we sell him if we can get good money and reinvest in someone who fits our system. I dont have have a strong view on it. Any thoughts?

Chieo is an enigma. Recognised as an international striker but unsuited to RUFC due to the system (successful) that we play. I thought he looked lost at PNE unlike Washington and Kelly who appeared confident and comfortable in their roles. That said, against Reading he was sometimes unplayable, but I question the quality of the opposition last Saturday. It must be a real head-scratcher for PW - does he play a system that suits Cheio or does he stick with his 'so far' successful system. I suggest he'd plump for the latter. In which case he has a valuable but superfluous asset on his hands.

If a good offer came in, and I think £3m + wouldn't be unreasonable, I would take it and invest in a striker who is more compatible with our style of play. If no such offer appears, keep him and play him as an impact sub when defences are tiring.

Probably not a popular proposition as he is such a popular player. However, in my opinion it's the realistic way ahead.

Usually agree with you Glenn but not sure this isn’t a bit tongue in cheek to get a reaction! Keep Chieo at all costs - his current goal scoring suggests he may well provide a lot of goals to keep our survival chances on track! At the moment he’s a bit of an unknown quantity to many teams and seems to be quite comfortable in that role tucked inside a striker whoever that may be! Success in staying up will be worth much more than the money we could expect for him and though we may think he’s worth it I don’t see many teams forking out £3m plus at the moment! Maybe in January when he’s bagged 15 goals and we are comfortably mid table!

AMiller - it's a tricky one. As we stand, Chieo is essential. The problem comes when Eaves is fit and we hopefully get in another dedicated striker. I'm not sure where Chieo would fit in; I don't think he's sufficiently good to play out wide in this league because of his poor delivery. So he would be competing for a striker spot against hopefully proven goalscorers. He would therefore probably become an impact replacement. You then have to calculate his value to the team in that role against his value in the transfer market which could be considerable. Much will depend on what happens in the transfer market over the next two weeks but it wouldn't surprise me if TS decides to cash in whilst Chieo has a transfer value should he secure the services of another striker.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Chieo but in the football business, sentimentality usually takes a back row seat to cash.

The money it would be worth to the club by stopping up will now far outweigh any transfer fee for Chieo.

And at this late stage it does not give us adequate time to source a good enough replacement coupled with the fact we like a good dither (Ashley Fletcher)

Didn't know this site still existed. Chieo has got off to a flyer. Four goals in five games (three in the league). Kelly, Eaves,Kayode and Washington are recognised strikers. Now whether any of those four can bag 15 goals a season is another matter. I think Kayode when fit needs another season out on loan. i get a feeling Warne has his doubts about Kelly and i only see him as the impact striker (big unit in last 20mins). That leaves Washington and Eaves. Neither have been prolific goalscoirers in their careers. Chieo has proved his worth as a striker in international football so i think he has to stay where he is and rotate with Eaves and Washington for the starting two striker roles.

if we played our game in hand and won it we would be top of the league!. A great start to the season. The next three games will give us an idea as to how much better we are than last time in the championship. I would take three points from the next three games as a good return.
Humphries, Wood and Hall appear to be Warnes preferred back three. So to lose Humphries for a long period of time is a blow imo.McCart a natural left sided defender will take his place probably, although Peltier and Harding could do the job. The loss of Smith,Eaves injury and the lack of confidence to start Kelly means we have become less reliant on the lump up to the big striker to relieve pressure. This has meant we play out more from the back and involve Barlaser in particular, in a deeper role. Washington appears good at running the channels and we have pace wide and in Ogbene up front.
I thought Birmingham were as poor as any championship side i have seen in the last three times we have been in it. Very little pace, a weak midfield and nothing up front. The goalkeeper kept the score respectable. I also felt for an hour it is the best football we have played in the championship. I still believe it will be a monumental task to keep us up but there are signs we have players who believe they can compete in it. I really hope we can keep Ogbene, Barlaser and Wiles. The icing on the cake would be to sign a quality striker. Warne has said there is nobody out there who we can get or afford. With that quality striker in i think we would finish out of the bottom four. Without him i still fear that fatigue might do us in the last three months of the season. Off to Donny airport in a few hours so see you in two weeks. UTM.
