IN PURSUIT OF THE DOUBLE

I doubt Rotherham United Football Club has ever been in a position where we are genuine contenders for both promotion and a cup victory in the same season. The only occasions I can think of in my living memory are the League Cup final of 1961 which we lost to Villa but we finished 15th in the old League 2. More recently 1996 and the Autowindshield victory at Wembley against Shrewsbury but we finished 16th in the new League 2.

This season we have a great opportunity for a victory at Wembley on Sunday against Sutton and we are well placed to then march on to an automatic promotion place over the remainder of the league season.

I'll be there on Sunday to hopefully witness the first piece of this historic jigsaw. Truth be known, I won't be too fussed if we lose but it's a great excuse to visit the home of football with my team without the pressure of a play-off final, for instance.

Here's hoping we all have a great day on Sunday, followed by a great end to the League season. We may never have it so good again in our lifetimes!!

Onwards and Upwards and Down Wembley Way!!

Might bump into you on Wembley Way! Like you I'm not uptight about the result. Just going for what should be a great experience. I get the cynicism about this Cup but a Wembley final is a Wembley final. Enjoy!

I'll look out for you Smiler - I'll be the one in a Red and White shirt!!

Never a dull moment being a Miller. 90 minutes of bang average mediocrity followed by a cracking 30 minutes of extra time. 4 quality goals and another trophy in the cabinet - what's not to love? Let's crack on and take our injury time form into the remaining league games and secure that automatic promotion!

I thought our subs all made a difference when they came on and Sutton tired badly. Credit to Sutton though - they were excellent and if they had won it in 90 minutes I wouldnt have had any complaints. There was only one side going to win it once it went to extra time. All in all a really good day.

The end, as they say justifies the means. We won, convincingly in the end but for 90 minutes I began to doubt whether we would win the encounter or even manage to get over the promotion line. After a two week layoff, with time for injuries to heal, tired legs to rest and time to regroup, I thought we would be fresh, well rehearsed particularly since he fielded his strongest side. But we started as we'd left off a fortnight ago. They controlled the game from the off. They were determined and tenacious forcing our boys into making mistakes, the only highlight from us was Wiles goal.and what superb skill it was too..In short, over the 90 minutes they deserved to win. It could be argued that their pace throughout was their downfall, they ran themselves into the ground. Tactical superiority on Warne's part of just luck that Tutu was in the right place at the right time (another superb strike by the way to hoist the ball over the heads of 4 defenders and a goalkeeper, to find a relatively small space in the top right corner)? I would give up all yesterday's heroics for another 3 points next week. I just hope the joy of lifting the cup after being down and out can reinstall some self belief and drive to get us over the line to promotion, preferably as Champions. What a phenomenal end of season that would be. We'll have to wait and see.

As gallant as Sutton were and as well as they played, they only really made three decent chances in the game. Two goals and the early miss that was dragged wide of the near post. Their goals were their only efforts on target. As poor as we were, we had more efforts on goal than them and more on target even during the ninety minutes and in extra time we could have scored several more times. The added time that they are moaning about was the minimum that was ever going to be on the board what with all the subs and one very long stoppage. So yes its hats off to Sutton for a great effort, but I'm not buying into the narrative that they outplayed us and were unlucky. We were widely expected to win so it felt like a surprise that it was a fairly tight and even contest, but in reality that is what it was in normal time. Our equaliser arrived late but it could have come earlier had Freddie finished his one on one. In extra time we ran away with it. I'm pleased the Sutton fans saw their team do then proud, but we did enough to win it and that's that.

Agree with your assessment there Smiler. In the bigger picture, it was a perfect game for us prior to our run in. A few cobwebs were eradicated, confidence was boosted and we saw quality where it's been lacking recently. Notably Lindsay and Ferguson looked sharp and Icky was solid. Chieo's discovered a new element to his game - goalscoring - which is going to be vitally important if Smudge's barren patch continues and Freddie fails to convert those relatively simple chances. If Rathbone can get his mojo back, I think we'll be fine.

Sat behind Frecks at Wembley and had a chat with him at half time. He still looks far too young to have retired and what we could do with him in this current squad!!

We were directly opposite you Glenn. In the middle level just on the west side of where they were presented with the trophy. I hear a lot of moaning about Wembley and no doubt it's in a terrible location (should be in the Midlands somewhere) but purely as a stadium I think it's fantastic.

Can't disagree with that Smiler - it's an impressive stadium. I just don't get the same buzz as one did when walking up Wembley Way towards the twin towers. Perhaps it's a symptom of familiarity - having been to the new one so often with Rotherham recently!!

Looking forward to getting back to NYS on Saturday!
