There have been some memorable encounters with Plymouth over the years. Rodney Fern's winning goal in the 80\81 season probably being the most notable. I also have fond memories of Home Park, particularly watching Man Utd play St Etienne in the European Cup after the former had been banned from playing at Old Trafford due to crowd trouble. Today could see us take a major step forward in our automatic promotion quest. A positive result would see us solidify our position at the top and dent the aspirations of one of our rivals. However, we have the luxury of not being overly concerned if we lose due to our strong position.

All the promotion pursuing sides have tricky encounters today and I wouldn't be surprised to see some drop points. Freddie is going to be up for our encounter against his former side and it would be great to see him lead us to a positive result. A draw would be a satisfactory result, a win would be wonderful. But if the worse happens, there's no need for panic - nice position to be in!

Onwards and upwards. C'mon you Reds!!

Let's not forget either Tommy Tynan's antics against us while playing for Plymouth on loan....from us!!! Even though his allegiance was clearly not with us, it's hardly decent sportsmanship or fair play from him or Plymouth FC.. I've never had much respect for them since.

This has all the hallmarks of a game we might lose. We looked a bit ropey on Tuesday, so a follow up that is a long trip to a top six side with a good home record might not be ideal. I'm glad we have a bit of a buffer - we will still be top and in a good position even if we do lose. Having said that, this bunch never stop surprising us with their resilience and ability to grind out results and it would be a brave person who bet against us. I'll say it will be a 1-1 draw which I would be very happy with.

Fabulous result!! Wonderful goal with a great assist by Ben Wiles. Lots of teams dropping points around us and I imagine Wigan are getting a bit concerned about MK Dons' form. This season seems too good to be true but it's borne out of hard work, great coaching, squad depth and a team ethic strengthened by a belief that we are the best in the League. Great credit to Warney and all the squad - couldn't ask for more!

That sums it up Glenn. It's a fantastic effort. It was an even contest and a draw would have been about right but we find ways to win. Some Plymouth fans seem to think they are as good as us because they matched us today. That's not how it works I'm afraid. They have seen a snapshot and we arent fully firing at the moment. We have lost twice to Fleetwood but they arent as good as us either. The league table will tell the real story. Good luck to Plymouth though. As long as we arent in the playoffs I'd like to see them win at Wembley. Ideally against our friends from S6.

Another great result from a tough game. Pretty even stuff but we just had that bit extra in the second half. Chances to both sides, the difference between the two sides being their finishing and another outstanding performance from Vickers. 9 pts Infront now but still plenty to play for. A good result on Tuesday and a positive next Saturday could see us cruising to winning the league. I just watched the final game of the 80/81 season again on YouTube. I thought I'd never see the like again, but I would say that side would be a poor second to the boys we have in the red and white today. UTM.

I know that there's a massive difference between now and football in the 80/81 season, but it would be good to do a selection of the best XI from the two sides. Unfortunately, due to only 3 of us inhabiting this site at the moment, and Smiler probably being far too young to remember, it's down to you and I Calypso. I'll have a think about it and put something down before the weekend's out. For starters, Vickers is definitely in goal!!

It’s a fascinating question Glenn - but as you say very hard to compare as we are not comparing like for like! Back in the day we were still playing 2-3-5 though I guess you could say both Breckin and Forrest could be compared to modern wing backs! Paul Stancliffe on his day could give anyone a run for their money and the forwards including Tiger Towner Ronnie and Rod Fern and the underrated but sublime skills of Seasman were a delight to watch! Ray Mountford after a shaky start became a brilliant goalie for us and we shouldn’t forget the quirky skills of Mark Rhodes and the steady John Green! Then there were the legendary Richard Finney and Billy McEwan, Henson, Gooding and Mullen! What a squad we had then - very much as we have this year - the sum of the parts and the team spirit generated by excellent management being the overriding factor! I’m sure we will look back with similar fondness for this team and its leadership In years to come! How lucky to have witnessed both!

Loving this! Trust me Glenn, I remember that season very well. I was 12/13 and went with the family. I think I missed about 4 of the 46 games that season. In a 352 formation I would pick: Vickers : Ihiekwe, Stancliffe, Mullen: Forrest, Seasman, Barlaser, Rathbone, Ferguson: Smith, Fern. Honourable mentions for Ronnie Moore, and Ben Wiles - it feels wrong leaving them out but there we are. For me it was Smith or Moore. And much as I love Wiles I loved Seasman more. Also no Towner or Chieo, but the great Gerry Forrest was ahead of his time and would have been the perfect wing back, dont you think? Although it's difficult to compare generations I think the current side is better than the old one. It's certainly a better squad. I believe I'm right to say we only used 14 or 15 players in that great season. Amazing to think of that.

As a dinosaur I, I'm not as familiar with the current squad as much as I was in the 80/81 season so I would have difficulty knowing the current positions played. This being due to the numbers worn on the shirts these days. For example back then the numbers ran 1 to 11 with 12 as a sub, with each number denoting the player's position, left wing, full back, centre half, inside right etc. I have to admit that not attending many games these days I am not so familiar as to who is supposed to do what. Gerry Forrest would be my No2 every time, Smith would edge it over king Ronnie, just, with Vickers over Mountford. The rest I couldn't say as our current No.18, whoever he is, for example plays, well where? At a guess I'd say Rathbone plays in a No 8 or 10 position and would also get a place in my squad along side Rod the Nod. The rest I would have difficulty speculating, therefore I can only say on squad achievement so far, with the present in***bents playing some lovely flowing football which is a delight to watch are probably, in my opinion, (despite it being a different game these days) get my vote. On a final point, watching the old games on YouTube, a horn was blown each time an opposing player was about to take a throw in or free kick etc in an effort to put them off...that was me and my mates. It was an old railway horn used as a warning signal and belonged to one of the lads and it was passed around so we could all have a go. It became something of a competition as to who could give the longest and loudest blast. Happy days UTM.

Very happy days Calypso. The current side is very good at getting something (usually a win) when not playing particularly well. All good sides do that and the 80/81 side was no different. I remember a trip to Gillingham to watch us put in an awful performance in a game that ended 0-0. A lesser side would have lost it but we scrapped for a point. There are many parallels. Both sides had a flyer on the right wing (Towner/Ogbene), a goal scoring target man (Moore/Smith) and an experienced centre back organising a mean defence (Mullen/Wood). I agree with you about Gerry Forrest. He is one who would get in the all time Rotherham XI. Incidentally, I can not really help you with where Rathbone plays except that notionally he starts in midfield but goes on to cover literally every blade of grass. He and Ben Wiles must be the hardest working, fittest players ever to wear our shirt. They take the phrase 'engine room' to a new level. We need to get you to some games. I'll send Glenn round to pick you up!

Another excellent result. Our goal led a charmed life at times but it shows our recent excellence when we are shocked that the opposition have a shot at goal. (A reference to some comments i read this week on another site).
Additionally Vickers had another great game but great teams have great goalies and they’re allowed to win matches for you.

Nine league games, eight wins and a draw and one goal conceded is a remarkable run of form (more so considering Wigan Wednesday and Plymouth are in that run). Also shows our strength that we are without Reg Miller and Grigg and can still rest our captain away to a pkay off contender ! Still challenges ahead but its purely a question of whether we finish 1st or 2nd for me now.

If i get time later i will try and add to the 1982 discussion, that was my first full season as a millers fan..

Our line-up against Plymouth yesterday compared to the line-up against them for the promotion match in 81/82.

Vickers
Harding
Ihiekwe
Mattock
Barlaser
Ogbene
Rathbone
Wiles
Ferguson
Smith
Lapado

Mountfield
Forrest
Breckin
Stancliffe
Mullen
Towner
Seasman
Gooding
Henson
Fern
Moore

My combined XI would be;

Vickers
Harding
Stancliffe
Forrest
Barlaser
Towner
Seasman
Rathbone
Ferguson
Smith
Fern

I seem to remember Seasman and Barlaser being very similar players - both ghost past opponents like they aren't there. Towner definitely has the edge over Chieo for his crossing ability alone. If we had someone like Rod Fern playing off Smudge, I think we'd have scored a bucket load more goals this season.

I'm not sure today's squad would be able to play their normal game on the pitches the old side had to endure. However, I suggest today's players are in a different league fitness-wise. It would be interesting to ask Ronnie Moore and John Breckin what their combined XI would be!

That’s a pretty sound selection Glenn, just uncomfortable about Forrest - great though he was as an attacking full back - not sure how good he would be as a left sided component of a back three - given the two options based on yesterday I’d go Breckin. Really made me think of midfield if we are looking at 3-5-2 - could we have the luxury of Barlaser and Seasman? On the other hand an alternative would be Gooding - but he was similar to Rathbone! My mind is hurting! 🤪 As you say Smith plus crafty Rod Fern would have been brilliant.

Whatever combined eleven you go with you have to leave some very, very good players out.
