Quite a shock that news Brad. Remember him well as player, manager and at one time described as the most expensive back in football. Sad to hear the news, he must have only been in his early 70s. He gave us some exciting games under his leadership and if I remember correct, poached by the Blades.
What sad news. He was a wholehearted and useful player was Billy and a bit of a tough nut. As a manager he assembled a really good side for us to win that title Brad mentioned. Good players like Bobby Williamson and Tony Grealish as well as some good youngsters like Mendonca, Raggy, Nigel Johnson, Des Hazel and Martin Scott. We played some really good attacking football. I seem to remember we clinched promotion by getting a point at Scunny and Billy came over and celebrated big style with the masses away support. Happy days. The feedback I got was that the players loved playing for him. RIP Billy McEwan.
Sad news.
I have fond memories of Billy.
In 1982 i was mascot and Billy was the only player who thought to give me a kick of the ball during the warm up.
As a manager, there was a spell which will forever be amongst my favourites, when we thrashed teams regularly including the famous 5-1 beating of Birmingham with hot shot Bobby’s hat trick.
RIP Billy
