Lazy Stereotyping

It's notable that every week we are described by opposition managers, supporters and journalists as being a big, physical and direct side. Are we really? We are a physically fit and athletic side and we like to get the ball forwards quickly and get crosses into the box. I will grant you that. But on Saturday we had Vickers in goal who is quite small for a modern day keeper (as is Viktor). We had REG at centre back who has a great leap but is quite short for a centre back. We had Ogbene and Ferguson at wing back who are both relatively small. Our midfield three of Rathbone, Wiles and Barlaser was hardly a trio of giants/beasts. And Grigg is about an average size for a centre forward. In reality, Wes Harding is a big strong lad, Ihiekwe is quite tall (not exceptionally so) and Smith has some height. That was it. And the truth is that we played some fantastic passing football. In a way I dont mind if the stereotype sows some doubt or concern in the minds of the opposition. I just hope it doesnt influence any pre-conceptions that referees might have. I do think we sometimes suffer a bit against teams who are willing to throw themselves around a bit and as a rule Smith tends to be given very little by refs.

Yes I think it is lazy journalism we have been labelled like this before and I don’t know why maybe it’s because of our yo yoing between league 1 and the championship where admittedly we do play a little more direct because on our limited budget we can afford the so called better player but our current side is certainly not a big/physical one compared to previous Millers teams
