Vs Wimbledon

Here we go again! Eyes down!

Let the great bingo caller rattle the bag...

I was surprised to find we have so little joint history with Wimbledon. Our destiny's have kept us apart more often than not.

They have a new manager and not unlike-like our own PW( know what I mean like )he has been with the club a long time before being given the hot seat just a few months ago .

Tactically they are adventurous both home and away.  It will be interesting to see if this makes PW think about the 352. They will probably go 4231, which will make for a real slugfest  in midfield. And, if like me you are losing faith in the system it will weaken any preexisting medical conditions you have, which of course the club takes no responsibility for. Football is not for the faint at heart or feeble of mind and it won't make yer rich...unless yer actually good at playing or deserve a good managerial post.

4231 is often described as the perfect modern formation. Then again every formation is perfect if you have the right players in the right positions. Being both attacking, defending and dynamic for the counterattack it's a hard system to play against.  Then again Wimbledon aren't top of the league and Wigan are . But , yes, Wigan play 4231 too. Confused!

Of course, we have the players to go 4231. , and I'm particularly thinking of barlasar and odoffin. No doubt we will have lots of time to have really sensible, articulate, happy back-slapping conversations as the season w e a r s on. I'm however hoping for a formula 1 type pick up starting Tuesday . Just to continue the metaphor I went out tonight following a meeting I had at 9pm to get me some petrol for Tuesday night. Zilch! Empty as freddies and griggs boots . I went to 7 petrol stations only to be confronted with that sinking feeling as I saw tape at one , followed by cones at another and orange barriers at yet more. Its a little late to buy me a tesla and way beyond my spending money. The trains an option but getting home wouldn't be. Still, nearly 48 hours to go. The government will sort it...eventually...maybe.

Matters beyond ones control. I guess both fan and manager and conscientious player must feel a little like my story above. We do our best and we keep on hoping but its out of our control.

Prediction.

I will make it to the ground.

It will be pretty warm for this time of year

PW will stick with 3 at the back

I'll be very nervous but I won't shut my eyes.

It will be a  2-2 draw .

Of course I accept no responsibility for my prediction.

I'm hoping of course for a win and a podium finish in May.

Keeping strong.

UTM

3-1 to us with Grigg finding the net at last. I'd like to see Lyndsey and Barlaser on the pitch too.

I will be back at the stadium as i now feel well enough to attend the game.

Wimbledon have made a better start than many expected, myself included. They are the second highest scorers with 16 league goals scored. However, they have let in 15 goals with only Ipswich letting more in. This might be a game where we have to take our chances because you have to fear they may score at least one. The goals have dried up for Wimbledon in the last couple of league games losing 1-0 to Plymouth and 2-1 to Shrewsbury. Before that game Shrewsbury had only scored four goals in 8 games. The four previous games before Plymouth saw Wimbledon scoring 14 goals in four games( against Morecambe, Oxford, Portsmouth and Ipswich). In all competitions they have scored 18 goals with 11 different goalscorers.

It looks like Mattock will be out injured. Wiles is a doubt as well apparently.Obviously Harding misses the game after his transgression on Saturday. Add to this Wood who struggles to play two games close together and we have a threadbare looking defence. If Wood is left out which i doubt it. He could go with Reg... Ihiekwe.... Bola. Not sure that is a good formation to stop a side who score well. Whoever plays on the left side of a back three they will have Feguson in front of them if fit to play. I don't see Miller coming back for this game. My guess is he will put Ihiekwe on the left of the back three and Wood in the middle. Probably the safest bet. Bola is probably better going forward than defending but Ihiekwe is a right footer on the left side and we all know how Harding has struggled with that.

Viktor.

Reg Wood Ihiekwe.

Ogbene Lindsay Barlaser Rathbone Ferguson

Smith Grigg

Good to hear you are feeling well enough again.

Enjoyable analysis too.

Like you deduce it is tricky picking that back 3. As I said I'm increasing going through a period of doubt about it.

Due to that doubt I'd play bola behind ferguson and then have icky and wood with reg at right back. That's a 4 at the back of course.

You never know if there is concern for Woody playing sat-tue-sat then we might see odoffin and barlasar sitting deep together. Doubt it though.

Problem with my thinking is it eventually leads to those box to box midfielders increasingly dropping deeper than in a 352.

However, lindsay seems to have dropped deeper than previous seasons. Wiles seems further forward and thus ollie is the one truly box to box player we have.

Grigg looks like he's not quite full match fit yet. Freddie to share time with him or should JJ be given a berth.

Could play that HM. Could put odoffin with barlasar and play 4231 also.

A lot will depend on wiles and wood being available for selection.

Wimbledon came to meet us toe-to-toe and for 20 minutes that midfield was in the balance. We won out and gradually took control. Fair play to them for trying to dominate and win the right to play.

I thought that was ogbenes best overall performance. His defensive duties and ability was pretty good tonight.

Smudge might have had one of his worst all round performances. He looked tired all game. He got a good brave however. Thats football.

Sad to see lyndsey go off with what looked like a bad injury. He held his hamstring and then his ankle. Sometimes a hamstring can be felt down the leg too, but we wait on Hope whatever it is . He looked very upset as he walked down the tunnel.

Griggs goal was very good. A strikers goal.

Some good energy from defence and rathbone once again deserved his MOTM.

Icky had a mixed game but looked far better on the left of a 3 than Harding does. Woody was excellent again and thank God he is the kind of warrior he is because some other players might have gone off and we had no real cover.

A word for REG, who also had his best game yet.

Good to see ferguson back in the starting 11 . I really like him.

One negative was too any missed chances once again.

Good performance against a team that tried to go forward but ultimately played into our hands

365 mile trip to watch the Millers tonight and worth every inch! Overall I thought it was a good game and Wimbledon were no slouches. Great to see Grigg score and his unselfish contribution was admirable. Rathbone is sensational - a ratter with a massive battery. There was some lovely build up play and although sometimes it doesn't come off, it's great to watch. Everyone put in a massive shift and we were worthy winners. A special mention for REG who's really impressive but understated. Now, where do I find some petrol round here!!!

Missed my prediction by them not scoring but onwards we march and the doomsday crowd can't have any complaints. Will Grigg will make them eat their words by Christmas, cracking player.

I thought we started slowly last night. I cannot remember a shot on target until we scored in the 36th minute. I was disappointed in Wimbledon and can only remember them creating one very good chance which should have been buried when we were leading 2-0

A lot of positives from the game. Pride of place has to go to Rathbone who seemed to be all over the place, tackling, running with the ball, having a shot and creating space for Barlaser to thrive. Barlaser has improved this season imo since Rathbone joined us. Ogbene has pace to burn and is learning how to play at wing back. Yes, his final ball still needs a lot of work, but he is the one player on our side who still gets you on the edge of your seat in anticipation. Reg had a good game last night, strong positionally and comfortable on the ball. Wood did what he does best. It is easy to criticise Ihiekwe because of his poor distribution and got caught out to give them their only chance. However, he does have a physical presence at the back and is generally good in the air. I would go with Ihiekwe every time at left back if the choice was between him and Harding... Grigg is beginning to show what he is capable of. Over ten yards he is quick to get the wrong side of the defender and his first touch is good. He is not a pacy forward but looks like he is quick to get in the right positions which is a good trait for a striker. Smith is pivotal to what we are all about and i think if Ferguson stays fit he will give him crosses to put in the net from the left.

All in all a good night. Not sure we were at our best but when you beat a side 3-0 who have started reasonably well you have to be happy with the nights work.

That was an excellent performance against a very decent team, ref was awful but so many are. It shows you doesnt it the difference to the shape and balance of a team if you play players in positions that they are more used to and comfortable in. Icky didn't have his best game but he hasn't played for a few weeks, but he still did the basics well and got on headers and he is a CB playing in a group of 3 CB's so it works!!! We played a left wing back and left wing back position and that worked, who would have thought.
I felt for Lindsay he gave us real bite in the middle, him and rathbone doing teh leg work allowed barlasar (not his best game either) to play and spread the ball around. Lindsay was very annoyed when he went down the tunnel so perhaps the injury could be worse than it first looked. Wiles did excellent that pass to Smith was amazing, this lad really gives everything and can play with both feet, a real talented footballer. Grigg and Smith did excellent as well, and I thought REG was man of the match he reads the game so well and looks very calm, we could have got a cracking player there. Last point we got the subs right in terms og changes and timing, one was forced they other two were sensible to give their defence something different to worry about and Barlasar always struggles to do 90 mins.

We did enough to overcome Wimbledon but we were nothing like as good against them as we were against Crewe. Our fans are certainly fickle - booed off after playing superbly and applauded off after being pretty ordinary. I agree with those who have said that Rathbone and REG were exceptional. Grigg is all class. If we can help him get his confidence back he will do ever so well for us because he is s proper player, as is Ferguson who consistently does the right thing in any given situation. I like how we are handling them both. We have a tough run of fixtures coming up so hopefully the natives wont turn too quickly if we dont win them all. It's a long season. We have a good squad of players and know how we want to play. I think we are getting closer to the ideal (for us) mix of getting the ball forwards quickly sometimes and passing and moving at others. We sit fifth and can feel a bit unfortunate at that because I can only think of the one league game (Fleetwood) in which we havent been the better of the two sides on view.
