Signed on loan for the rest of the season. It hasnt worked for him at Sunderland but that has been a graveyard for many a good striker. This is a 30 year old with well over 100 career goals signed on a one season loan. It represents the club pushing the budget as far as it can within the rules to give us the best chance possible. We have invested in young players and have now added an experienced goalscorer into the mix. He wont have come for more money.
Presumably therefore he has come because he still has a desire to play regular football All signings are a gamble to some extent, but to me this looks like one that makes a lot of sense. The only outgoing is Tilt who clearly is not keen on us or vice versa and we have to stay within squad size rules.
This is a great signing for us and he will complement Smudge perfectly with Freddie as impact player from bench. Seen Grigg play a few times and he's a class act - this is good news and doubled by not losing Smith as predicted.
Bobby Williamson Mk2
Totally agree with Smiler's post. Grigg is a player who had a brilliant goalscoring record for Wigan in Division one. He struggled for them in the championship scoring only 5 times in 33 appearances. He moved to Sunderland for £3m but never seemed to settle in. He actually said he should never have left wigan as he loved it there.
Grigg, could be the player that gets us into the play off mix. I don't see him as a gamble like Hirst was. He has a good record of scoring in this league. Even last season on loan to M.K Dons he scored 8 times in 20 league appearances.
i do not understand the bile that comes mattocks way on this site and other sites. This is a player who has played 190 times for us (mostly consistent). He is 32 next year and is coming to the end of his distinguished career. Last season he had injury problems (first season for us) and he is now a squad player who can come on or fill in like he did against Donny. What point Hillsborough is making i do not know in his post. Mattock has played the odd game at centre back so why post up that latest bit of bile . He is a miller who has given great service. I am biased because i have met him on a couple of occasions at my grandsons school and is a top man. He certainly doesn't deserve this sort of s**t imo. I know everybody has their opinion but it might look better if it is a little more positive.
As transfer windows go, this must be one of our most positive. Keeping Smith is fundamental to our attacking threat; keeping Barlaser is fundamental to our creativity, particularly when Chieo is fit, and getting rid of Tilt is fundamental to club moral and cohesion. Anyone who saw Tilt's antics when warming up in front of the West Stand against Donny can have been in no doubt that he didn't want to be here.
Finally, bringing in a proven striker to play alongside Smudge, give Lapado a kick up the arse and coach young Kayode is nothing short of inspired. Welcome Will Griggs. You have the opportunity to ressurect your career and become a hero at this club. Play-offs here we come!!
On paper it's as good a signing as we could have made. He looks to be made for our style of football too; plenty of balls into the box for him to have a go with. Seems also like an ideal foil for smudge .
As said above its probably the best window for many a seasons.
2 off topic points...mattock I do not regard as being at the end of his career and I've always though he has been great for us
Tilt, I would have liked to have seen but as smiler said we clearly do not get on because he is a good player.
A great signing and well done to the board for resisting offers for Smudge amd barlasar. I agree that if Tilt doesn't want to be here it is best that he is allowed to play elsewhere, there are questions on this though. We are very think in CB now, we play a right back at left CB in a three and a 36 year old, we have taken a young lad from Huddersfield but he seems to be a right sided player and we have Angus and we know nothing about when to expect his return.
I hope we have someone in the academy that can provide us cover, I do not think mattock is up to the job as a CB. We pursued Tilt for months, yet he has played 1 game for us and has been shipped out 3 times, now clearly there is an issue there, let us assume it is 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, but what a disastrous signing and waste of money, if he can play 36 times for Wigan what is wrong?
We might never know what the issue is with Tilt but there clearly is one. Whether that is personal or professional - who knows?
Tilt aside, I can only think of Clarke and Purrington who we paid a fee for and who have not had a real positive impact for one reason or another, and we recouped at least a good proportion of the fees we paid for those two when they left. Alongside that sits a much longer list of players who Warne has paid a fee for and who have contributed massively and probably added to their value. Off the top of my head Crooks, Ajayi, Smith, Ogbene, Ladapo, Lindsay and Barlaser spring to mind.
I know the recruitment team gets stick and I would accept that a number of our loan signings have not been up to scratch, but I don't think that we can be accused of wasting money in the transfer market. In fact we must be net well ahead. Not every signing works out well but our success rate must be higher than most.
As for centre backs, I am hoping that letting Tilt go out might be an indication that Angus is not far away from being available. Potentially we have Icky, Wood, Harding and Angus who are naturals in a back three. Amarni-Green has played there a number of times in the Championship and we were told when they signed that both Odoffin and Bola could play there if needed. I also think Mattock can play there. He didnt defend well when Accrington scored their goal against us but it was his first appearance for months and other players seem to get cut some slack in those cir***stances. A fit Mattock is still a good league one player. We only have room for so many players in the squad, and it seems to me that we have plenty of cover in that department. We could also presumably play 442 if we really had to.
