I'll be honest I didnt recognise Giles. I dont remember seeing much of him although I know he had a great reputation. Perhaps not such a great player but another Millers connection - is that Vic Halom looking on? I know he played for Sunderland in that final.
I remember watching Leeds as a young boy. I also remember our neighbours, mum and all gathering around the TV to watch Leeds in their infamy and glory.
Thinking back it was a very grudging praise that everyone had but also a palpable will to see them lose . They were the biggest draw perhaps the first big loved/hated team in England.
In balance however they were always exciting and full of great players as well as dirty as they come.
I saw this Leeds team play a couple of times. It was among my first touch of football magic
I even asked for the kit with the sock tags and of course my kit was number 7.
I remember the total joy of wearing it and kicking the ball on our rec.
Of course. I watched that game with my dad who is from South Shields and a big Sunderland fan. He had a ticket for the final but for some reason (I think work) couldnt go in the end. I was five. It is one of my earliest clear memories. Back to Peter Lorimer, it was him I think who was thwarted by the legendary save of Jim Montgomery. Lorimer was already celebrating the goal before Montgomery somehow kept it out. I remember seeing Lorimer on TV highlights score with a few thunderbolts - he could definitely hit a ball sweetly.
Often went to Elland Road in the 1960's to watch Lash Lorimer and Leeds United play. Sat in awe as ''Steady'' Eddie Gray scored that tremendous goal at home against Burnley. Think it was May 1970. He skipped past several players before putting the ball into the back of the net. It was over 20 years later when I saw Eddie Gray again. This time it was down at Millmoor. We were both sat near the tea stall next to the main stand, He was scouting at that time. It was a Tuesday night reserve game in early January. As he left with a pal before the end of the game we shook hands and wished each other a 'Happy New Year'.
