Goalkeeping situation

Paul Warne's views.....

Boss Paul Warne decides on pecking order for Rotherham United goalkeepers (rotherhamadvertiser.co.uk)

Love ya to bits Warney but you are very very wrong here, hardly put a foot wrong?

I hope the Tiser doesn't run an article about how Warnie thinks George Hirst is a top Championship striker.

He's done the right thing in picking his number one and backing him, I'm just not sure he's picked the right number one. Hope I'm proved very wrong. I do think Blackman is getting better to be fair to him, but I was much more impressed with Johansson, albeit only in one game, and we know the dangers of instant judgements based on one game!

Confidence is everything for a goalkeeper. Whatever he thinks privately and whatever work they think they need to do behind the scenes, it is absolutely right that publicly and maybe even directly with all three goalkeepers he says how good they are and how much he trusts them. Criticising them in the media would just make any problems worse. Our goals against record is decent. Blackman has made a lot of very good saves and was really starting to look the part before his injury (kicking apart but that may have been in part because of the injury), but the goal at Swansea was a combination of a poor punch and a shot he should have saved. Johansson got away with a couple of hairy moments against Preston. Vickers apparently did well at Lincoln but has never played at this level. Personally I would stick with Blackman for now. He is the most experienced and he has the attributes to be a good keeper. With him more than most, confidence might be everything. There might come a point where you have no choice but to change it, but in my opinion we arent there yet. I think it's a close call mind.

Me we've seen two both don't convince me. Let's see third. Blackman doesn't matter how you look at it cost us the game at Swansea then nearly gifted them a 2nd. That can't go on.

Pardon?

Just a tip George, have a read back before you press 'submit post' and see if it makes any sense.

I would stick with Blackman just i think . On Saturday's goal he let in. He came for the ball and punched it to the edge of the box, he then fluffed a save from a shot from distance, but with a lot of players around him. His punch went a fair distance but not to the sides. If i was him i would have expected the shot to have been charged down or blocked but his effort to save the shot did not look good.

Don't want to add to the lack of trust in Blackman, but I wonder if others have noticed how often he fails to catch/stop the ball cleanly. Even the most straightforward shot/cross are likely to be fumbled.

Agreed, my heart is in my mouth with every cross that goes in & the CBs don't trust him

That's been my main issue with him Glenn, I actually don't think he's really been at fault for most of the goals we've conceded. I don't think he's commanding enough, there always seems to be a slight hesitation from him.

If Blackman had been at a lower division club we would not have contemplated signing him. It’s the the Chelsea connection that suggests he ought to be good. Unfortunately, I have seen nothing in his performances so far which suggests he his good enough to play at a professional level.

He is poor from crosses, he is immobile but will occasionally get in the way of the ball. He cost us one goal on Saturday but could quite easily have been three. It is obvious the defence do not trust him. He is 6ft 6ins but 5ft6ins when he jumps.

The problem with goalkeeping is that it hurts and you have to get dirty, he wants to do neither.

Not a good signing but I hope he proves me to be totally wrong.

From what i can gather Vickers was solid and reliable at Lincoln but not too athletic.Bet he gets a chance before Christmas and that unfortunately will be because the others have made mistakes.

I’ve not really been impressed by Blackman, he’s not agile enough for a championship standard goalkeeper in my opinion.

Ok people point to him being at Chelsea but he’s 27 now and how many games has he played for them? Match day squad involvements? Like a lot of other players at Chelsea he’s useful to them for making them a good loan fee every year.

I’m disappointed we didn’t seem to go all out for Daniel Iversen again.
