I'd sooner see us in League 1 next season. We are not ready for Championship football. At the start of this current season I was looking forward to a mid-table finish. I would have been happy with that. But we are near the top of the table looking at automatic promotion. Then we lose the match against Rochdale. For some it's the end of the world. Suddenly some of our players are being criticised for having an off day. Sh!t happens. Players do have off days. Anyway it can get tedious having to travel down to Wembley every other season to win a play-off final. Who wants that? I like League 1 football. We don't get battered every other week. We will able to hold our own plus I don't think we will have the financial clout to survive in the Championship.
As a footnote I'm looking forward to the Cheltenham Festival next week. There is another life away from the beautiful game.
It used to be the Sporting Life for me but I take the Racing Post these days.
At least I will be able to recycle the newsprint if the shops run out of toilet paper. Happy days!
I agree not the end of my world if we do not go up. This present team is nowhere good enough for the championship I shall be there first friendly we play at the NYS next season. That is what real supporters do have a good moan but back for some more punishment, I want to know when are 20/21 season tickets coming out I can't wait to get one.
Wotsisname agree no point going up unless you have the basics of a side to have a chance of staying there. We haven't.
Cheltenham festival only the best win there. Unmissable for me. If there's enough interest I'll have a study & try to make a profit on the week. I did last year but I take it serious I look at the ratings. Got a couple of tipsters I rate. Going to be harder this year with the softer ground
Not about you though is it? If the club doesn't have the ambition to be a championship club then the players that have ambition will not stay or come to us, then you end up with a poorer side and lower crowds and it is a spiral, what sort of person in their career at its peak aims for mediocre? What is so funny it is you three that complain about having players that are mediocre. Last season we were 4 points and one good signing away from staying up, we are capable of staying up and the longer you stay there the better the finances become when your club is managed well
It is not what I want but are we good enough. I do hope this manager can turn things around as I said earlier in the week we are short of leaders tell me if I am wrong. The bad news for the lot of you I will still be around next season.
Some very good points from 'Derby'. I totally agree with him when he says we were close to staying up last time in the championship and the longer you stay there you have the better finances coming in to compete. When we went down we were in no position to keep our better players and sold Ajayi and Vaulks. This money eased the debt accrued in trying to stay up and contrary to some opinions on here only a fraction of that amount (Ladapo, Lindsay, Iversen, Ogbene ) has been used.
I am not sure it is about the clubs ambition to be a championship club. It is about what we are capable of attracting to us. We have to look for rough diamonds who we can hone into better players. People like Vaulks, Ajayi and now Ogbene and Ihiekwe, say we are on the right lines. They will not be many of these to go around the clubs who are looking for the same. 'Derby' is correct though when he says. ' If we do not have that ambition players will not stay or come to us'. A footballers career is short and has to strive for his best when at the peak of his powers. I am an oap so i want us back in the championship asap because its a challenge and i might not have too many more seasons in me home and away.
I can never get my head around anyone saying they are not bothered about going up, to me that's just daft on so many levels...
We are having a blip, which might cost us promotion, we don't know yet, but I think this squad is Much Better overall than ones we've had for a while. Just my view, but I think with 4 or 5 additions we could make a real fist of staying up next year if we manage it.
Another key thing is that we have a decent core squad instead of 5000 loan players (Evans style) that would mean we don't lose them unlike previous campaigns..

Suspect the chairman doesn't want and certainly cannot afford promotion. His ideal scenario will be to just miss out and therefore protected from any flak and keep drawing the rent from RUFC.
We will see were we are in the next couple of seasons. I reckon some big clubs are going to go bust this virus might clean one or two out. A club like ours with no major debts should have strong foundations to survive any earthquakes that might happen.
