Horseracing Epsom Derby 2019

Here is the pinstickers guide to this years Epsom Derby. Not everyone's cup of tea.

It's a 4.30 p.m. start.

1 Anthony Van Dyck

NEWSBOY SAYS:  Podium finisher at the top level at two and strong at the line to land Listed Lingfield Derby Trial, so respected

2 Bangkok

NEWSBOY SAYS:  Followed maiden win from Telecaster at Doncaster with fluent score in G3 Classic Trial at Sandown Park, and trip should suit

3 Broome

NEWSBOY SAYS:  Came home well to lift Leopardstown’s G3 Ballysax Stakes and Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial and this test looks tailor-made

4 Circus Maximus

NEWSBOY SAYS:  Made to work to land Listed Dee Stakes at Chester on comeback and might just lack the zip of a few in this field

5 Hiroshima

NEWSBOY SAYS:  Followed Southwell maiden success with 50-1 8th behind Anthony Van Dyck at Lingfield and looks hopelessly out of his depth

6 Humanitarian

NEWSBOY SAYS:  Landed odds of 1-3 in novice stakes at Salisbury last month on return but that was a world away from what is required today

7 Japan

NEWSBOY SAYS:  Won G2 Beresford Stakes at Naas last September but hard to get excited about his 4th to Telecaster in G2 Dante Stakes at York

8 Line Of Duty

NEWSBOY SAYS:  Clinched Breeders’ Cup glory at two but flopped in 7th behind Telecaster at York, so questions to answer on that score

9 Madhmoon

NEWSBOY SAYS:  Looked in need of further when staying on into 4th in G1 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, but might prove best at up to 10f

10 Norway

NEWSBOY SAYS:  Brother to 2013 Derby hero Ruler Of The World was beaten 8l by Sir Dragonet in in G3 Chester Vase, so work to do

11 Sir Dragonet

NEWSBOY SAYS:  Late starter followed Tipperary debut with 8l margin in Chester Vase 13 days later and has bags of as-yet untapped potential

12 Sovereign

NEWSBOY SAYS:  Behind Broome at Leopardstown both starts this year and not an obvious reason why he should turn the tables here

13 Telecaster

NEWSBOY SAYS:  Beaten by Bangkok on debut but two wins since include Dante Stakes, so needs to be taken very seriously with more to come

I've gone Bangkok, so best avoid that one, lol.

Though I did back Defoe yesterday, and can't come off Duke of Firenze in the 3.45, as he did me a favour at 16-1 last week... (massive field though so tough to name the winner)

Humanitarian has no real chance of winning the Derby according to some racing pundits. It's worth backing as an e/w shot.

Anthony Van Dyck won the race. AVD was antepost favourite for the Derby way back in January 2019. Who'd have thought it?

Never be another Shergar. Race didn't look anything special. How can you back Aiden O'Brien he rarely goes in with the fav' from his numerous runners in the Derby. Give me top jump racing anytime, more chance of finding the winner.

Shergar looked very ordinary when beaten into fifth place in the 1981 St Leger by Cut Above ridden by jockey Joe Mercer. In fact Shergar's tongue was hanging out of his mouth with a furlong to go.

Shergar was one of the great Derby winners, they'll never take that away from him. The choir boy Walter Swinburn rode in the Derby. Piggott rode him to win the King George.
