Team for Villa

Working down south so missing what is the biggest game of the season so far. Gutted. Assuming Jones is out I would go with: Rodak: Vyner, Ihiekwe, Robertson, Mattock: Ajayi: Williams, Vaulks, Wiles, Newell: Smith.

I wouldn't be upset with that team selection Smiler. As ever, it depends how individuals perform on the night. I really hope Semi's performance on Saturday was a one-off - he was totally out of touch. Also, a 100% performance from Newell is required. A bit more self-belief and some more robust defending would make him a worthy inclusion. It would be good to see if Wiles could steal the limelight from Greilish whose a bit too precious for me. Hopefully Robertson and Mattock will be back to full fitness and Ihiekwe can put in another massive performance. If all those things slot into place, it should be a breeze! Onwards and upwards!!

Never pick a team see who runs out our manager seems confident we just need to keep the ball more like we did in the second half on Saturday could be another great night at the NYS.

Yes Glenn, Semi had a shocker on Saturday by his standards. Hopefully a one off because he has been generally outstanding otherwise. As you suggest, we need everyone to be on it to get anything tonight and perhaps the rub of the green too. I'm with you on Grealish. He should be playing for Norwich - he would slot right in.

And then fall over when anyone goes near him no

Semi & Wiles for me in Midfield, they need to create more chances as Villa will be able to cope with the hoof ball that we will obviously revert too if we cant pass it through the crowded midfield.

Rodak needs to be on form, and command his area well, we have had a high line defence recently and the likes of Abraham will expose the lack of pace in our back line if we are not too careful.

We need to be up and at em from the off, early goal to settle the nerves.

We so need these 3 points and lets hope by 9:30pm that we are out of the bottom 3.

Playing Vyner and Williams down the right hand side would leave us a bit exposed i fear. Its bad news that Jones is out because at home he gave us a more sold look defensively. Not sure what he will go for. I would like to see Ihiekwe at right back and Ajayi as central defender but it would leave our midfield toothless. Vyner hasn't figured at all recently and has had a bug. He is the obvious choice if well to replace Jones but with Williams in front of him the likes of El Ghazi,Kodija and Grealish would fancy there chances if we set up like that.
On the Villa forum some think Villa will score early as they have been doing apart from Saturday and get a couple in front and coast home. Others believe it will be a hard night and if they turn up expecting an easy ride will be in for a rude awakening. I think it will depend on Villa taking those early chances. If they do i think its a long night for us. If we can keep in it until half time it could be a good night for us.
My team
Rodak
Vyner Ihiekwe Robertson Mattock

Ajayi.
Forde Vaulks Wiles Newell

Smith.
I am sure gwru will think i have gone mad picking Forde, but he is better than Williams and Taylor at giving Vyner the much needed cover defensively. I am afraid we are not good enough to take the game to Villa so i think this sort of set up is our best option.

whiston01 we can't just sit back we need players who can take the game to them. Forde can't, don't think he is in the managers plans for next season anyway. Williams for me.

Its not about sitting back gwru its about doing something which will give us the best chance of getting something. If we go toe to toe with Villa there can only be one result. They have far superior attacking players. Its about frustrating, getting things from set pieces and taking the sting out of them.

If we go two nil down after 30 minutes, then there is no way we should be chasing a lost cause and pick up unnecessary injuries in the process and ship more goals. If however, we go into the half time break at 0-0, what's to stop us nicking a point by holding them to a draw by full time? Wishful thinking perhaps, but we can do it.

Way I look at it we gave Norwich a game with players missing. Forde starting who next to useless, taken off at HT. Warney you say we'll take the game to Villa. Pick the players to do that. Defenders quick enough to deal with their forwards.

You're asking him to pick players we haven't got gwru, lol..

I think on any day this season we are capable of losing by 5 or winning by 1... We can only ask they give their all and hope it's good enough, as you say we were nearly good enough against Norwich, plus some good luck for a change, and hope they have an off-night.

Looking fwd to it

UTM

I agree with Davidedin we haven't the players to go for it. They have a squad full of attacking talent. On saturday they had Lansbury,Hourihane, Kodija and Adomah on the bench. Add this to Mc Ginn,Green, Whelan,Grealish,Abraham and El Ghazi and i think its fair to say they have the best attacking squad in the league. We have to get in their faces and not respond to their diving and all other aspects of the dark side these bigger clubs bring.
Its a long shot for us to get anything tonight but if we create a hostile atmosphere and the lads give everything and take our chances when they come you never know. UTM

I understand the logic of Force playing in front of Vyner. It wouldn't be my choice, but I see the thinking. We need to carry some attacking threat to keep Villa honest. It's a question of getting the balance right. We do tend to change our wide players off the bench as we ask a lot of them to track back and also support Smith. They might all have a part to play.
