After Wednesday

Never got to grips with Jaoa however you spell it, did we?

2 points dropped, Vaulks and Towell should have buried those 2nd half, Wednesday, for the money spent and wages earned are dire, totally rubbish take Jaoa out the team and Forristieri who spends most time injured they'd go down.

Certainly they were there for the taking, but we knew that before. This inability to win games where we create more is down to quality. From that perspective we are exactly where we should be. Warne and the team are doing really great. However, it's all relative. Warne might have to consider more game time for Proctor. There isn't any other way to get more goals and the defence remains prone to basic errors.

One of the players we should go for in January is John Marquis From Doncaster need a regular goal scorer just seen Billy Sharp score on Sky I know we drew today but the other results have gone for us.

OK, it is frustrating not to win a game we should have won, but our performances continue to improve and a number of players look increasingly comfortable at this level. We got an away point. The bottom three all lost. Hull drew at Millwall which was the perfect outcome. Brentford continue to sink like a stone since they lost their manager and we have seen today that Wednesday really are relegation candidates. All in all today was a very good day for us. Next week is massive. Bolton play Leeds and Wednesday are at Swansea. If we can beat Reading, we could find ourselves six points clear of the bottom three and above our friends from Hillsborough. We need to get the NYS packed to the rafters and really give it to Reading.

Just watched brief highlights. Smith's goal was the only one were you couldn't find fault somewhere. Robertson was out with an illness which is good news. Him & Ajayi works as centre backs. Got to beat Reading next Saturday. No Forde or Taylor please, also no Williams in midfield. If Warney doesn't fancy Manning in midfield time to start with Wiles. Reading at home would be a good game for him to make his league debut start.

Fantastic effort from the guys again today. Completely mullered Wednesday in the first half and to go in 1-0 down was the greatest injustice in football. We showed great resolve in the second half - after we went 2-1 up I thought we would take them to pieces. But to their credit, they played their best football and we couldn't come to terms with their midfield and attack for a good 20 minutes. However, we were the side most likely to win and in the last 15 minutes we really should have put them to bed.

We shouldn't underestimate the conditions today, emphasised by Rotherham's high clearance late in the game which turned completely around and was heading back towards our goal by the time it landed. It made defending the high ball very tricky. In the first half our midfield was superb - Vaulks and Towell were even '****y' in the way they controlled that area.

Lots of good performances around the park but I thought Taylor had a really poor 2nd half. He had numerous chances on the left to ease the pressure and to take us on the offensive but his lack of real pace and inability to beat an opponent were really exposed. I'd have been tempted to bring Newell on for 30 minutes.

Finally, congratulations to the Owls security staff who wouldn't allow me to take my lucky brolly into the ground despite the fact it was hissing down. Only ground ever to refuse it entry and it's feeling very hurt!

Another good effort but still no away win. We were comfortably the better team in the first half but went in one down after being undone by a routine long ball which should have been dealt with. Why did Vyner go to ground? Joao took it well and i believe he is the only positive Wednesday can take out of the game. Was a threat most of the game.
We came out second half and scored immediately with Smith taking his chance well. Then their goalie lets in a soft one and its looking good. However, after this they had their best spell and levelled. Hindsights a great thing but i think if Warnie had put Proctor on for Forde and moved Williams out wide when we were 2-1 up they might have struggled, but we took our foot off and we let them back in. We came on strong at the end and Towell and Vaulks had chances to win it.
I thought Smith was a handfull all afternoon, Vaulks and Towell were the best two midfielders on the pitch and williams had a good hour but tired a bit. Robertson was missed as it looks like Wood is just a bit short in this league. Taylor struggled to make any influence and Forde was steady in what he did. He is possibly our best deliverer of a cross.. A point away at a team above us looks ok but again its possibly two points lost.

whiston01 do you think how Wednesday are playing flattered us abit. Can't have Forde & Taylor in the side. They've never been championship players, never will be. Add Palmer to that list. Reason we can't get that away win is obvious. We are lacking that bit of quality in certain position. Right back, Left winger needs additions in the January transfer window. Move players out I've just said aren't up to this level. Might need a midfield player. There's got to be something Warney dosen't like about Manning. I don't know about up front cause way we play we aren't going to play 2 up front. Ideally would like a left sided player who can at times support the loan striker.

Suspect Warne is concerned about Manning's lack of pace. He has the ability to beat a player but cannot get away from them. He will be useful in some situations but yesterday we needed mobile midfielders to put pressure on them whenever they had the ball - perhaps not Manning's strongest point. And gwru, I think everyone has hoisted onboard your feelings regarding Palmer, Forde and Taylor - doesn't need repeating ad nauseam!

GlennMiller I come out in a cold sweat with the mere sight of those 3 players names on the team sheet. Just get them out of the club & I'll gladly never mention hide & hare of them again!

When we were in this league apart from when Warnock was here it was little roll over Rotherham now it's well organised Rotherham at least we go into some games thinking I think we can win today. One player who has taken his chance with us is Smith remember seeing him play on SKY for Swindon when he younger looked very promising then then he signed for Charlton & Portsmouth wrong clubs for him give Paul Warne some credit for spotting him at Bury & signing him for nothing I thought at the start of the season here's a player who has got a second chance and is going to take it. Come on warney in January dig a few more nuggets out + Sign Marquis. Man City lost yesterday because they are scared of playing us in the cup in January.

Wednesday were ordinary gwru but we did well in the first half and most of the second half. Its just that bit of quality we lack all over the pitch, but you cannot knock the effort.
I agree with gwru that Palmer and Taylor in particular probably should be moved on (need replacements which is difficult). I do think Forde does a job out wide in away games. Gives more protection to Vyner than Williams or Taylor could do.
We have Manning and Newell who are left sided but neither have the pace to get up and support Smith. I still believe a left sided winger, a defensive midfielder and of course a finisher is ideally what we need. Right back is an area we have Vyner, sick note and in emergencies Vaulks so i think its further down the list of ideals. We will need to move a couple or three out and i would look to get money for Palmer and Taylor to fund new arrivals. Not sure if Manning is what we need either.
I cannot see us signing Marquis, because if he leaves Donny i think there will be bigger clubs with bigger wads of cash than us in for him. Same applies to Keifer Moore.

We will not get a better opportunity to win an away game and that is extremely worrying. That was the worst Wednesday side i have ever seen and unless Allardyce (rumoured) or similar turns up soon i can see them going down. But they're still 3 points better off than us ! The chairman has got to loosen his purse strings big time in January otherwise we will not have the quality to stay up. It is critical we pick up maximum points before then however because the back end of season fixtures are frightening.Sincerely hope the head of recruitment has managed to spot some young and hungry hidden lower league gems. We don't want wet Premier lge kids just out for experience.

whiston01 can see were you are coming from regards Forde giving Vyner more cover in away games. Against that would sooner have Williams on the right rather than in midfield. Problem at Right back needs sorting out in January. Ideally would like Jones same as Potter to be mutually released from their contracts on medical grounds but that's unlikely. Either way we need a 1st choice Right back signing. Would like to keep Vyner as cover but will his parent club be happy with him not playing regular & would our budget allow us to carry 3 Right backs? Manning can be sent back. Would like a Right back & Left winger in for the Ipswich away game in January.

I agree I think that Wednesday side is even worse than under that Welsh failure, Yorath was it?.

I get worried that we rarely score when on top. Games, all games, have both teams taking control, we certainly had 35 mins of the first half and only managed to work the keeper twice. 2nd half nobody had it, even when we went 2-1 up, when they came outta that stupid counter attack shell I think they edged the last 15-20 minutes albiet us missing those glaring chances.

We have to absolutely start scoring more when on top in games, it will make life so much easier. This isn't about strikers either it's the mentality of the front 6-7 players, put your chances away, but I guess in any position those do cost money, however it can also be coached. C'mon Warney, Barker and Hammy, give em some attacking play sessions you know it makes sense.

I think the Wednesday game sums us up. Tremendous effort and no little ability, but not quite enough quality to manage the game when in front or take those chances to win the game when they came along. So we get a creditable point but with a tinge of disappointment that we didn't get more. There are conflicting feelings of pride and frustration. The challenge for Warne is how to add that extra bit of quality to the side when we haven't got the money to just buy in established class. No doubt some of our players have developed and continue to improve. I suspect that the answer is that we have to work with the willing group that we have, build and add within our means over time, perhaps boosted by the occasional sale of a player who attracts interest at a good fee, and accept that in the meantime Warne and the players are giving everything they have and applaud them for it even if that means we might sometimes come up a bit short.

By the way I don't understand the people who are saying we should have put Proctor on after we went 2-1 up.  The reason Wednesday came back into it was that Bannon was starting to get on the ball more.  Taking a man out of midfield would have compounded that problem and chances are that it would have had the opposite effect than people wanted ie it would have handed Wednesday the initiative.  I thought it made perfect sense at 2-1 up to stick with the formation that had got us there and that was working well.  Putting Wiles on with instructions to get in and around Bannon also made a lot of sense.  I don't think Warne could be faulted at all for his tactics - it was just a lack of execution in big moments that cost us.  And that isn't to have a go at anyone - they all gave 100% as usual.

Proctor has to start playing. It makes sense. Half way through the season. Warne and the boys are greatbut we are still in the quicksand. We all agree quality exchange for 1 or 2 of them. However, goals win 3 pts. We aren't winning. It's tremendous to build like we have and play so competitively but now we have achieved that it's time to tinker. Evidence is clear. Keep doing what you are doing and expect a different result?! Can the management team see the change? Dare they take it? If they don't and can't then I expect we may be going to the last game of the season.

Virtually halfway through the season Ian and we are 19th. Same again in the second half of the season and it looks like we might just stay up. We've found a formula that is keeping us in with a chance which is really as good as most of us thought was possible. I would favour looking for continued improvement within that framework rather than aiming higher and risking getting ripped apart. I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater. There might be certain games and opppnents where 442 might work, but generally speaking the idea that having two up front equals more goals doesn't stack up in my opinion. If you can't ever get the ball to play it forwards or if you are conceding four every week you can have as many up front as you like - you will lose most matches. In any case, we are starting to create more chances and score more goals as it is.  Seven in our last four games should really have netted us more than three points.  It has been soft goals given away that has cost us recently.
