Semi Ajayi & the January transfer window

According to reports ( rumours ) there is lots of interest in Semi with TS saying he wont sell him for less than £5m. Given RUFC & their famous business a***en any £2m bid that comes in TS will drive the lad there himself. If we do sell will Tony let us spend on improving our threadbare squad? Who knows but even if we are allowed there's still the problem of actually persuading the quality we need to move up here as A; It's not exactly a glamorous move & B; we have a wage structure that wont be broken.. thoughts?

There's no option but to sell him if the right offer comes in. With Robertson now well established and Raggett close to a come back we aren't too badly off in that position. Tony would be mad not to reinvest the money as we clearly have a real chance of staying up. I would think that that sort of money could be spent on two or three players to strengthen in certain other areas without breaking the wage structure.

Won't get £5 million for Ajayi in the January transfer window. Budgets have been set in the summer window. You don't see many big deals at this level in January. Raggett he's not our player also not got the pace of Semi.

Tony Stewart has a solid history of keeping players he and then manager rate. I tend to believe he wont let anyone go for money unless it is indeed respectful of what he wants.

firstly - he's a much better player in front of the back line, he's too risky as centre back, as he showed against Sheff U and again today at Norwich...

secondly if we got a bid of anything over £1.5M, surely the correct decision is to sell... we could have another centre back and a new striker....

You're absolutely correct Davidedin. Semi's regular errors in the back line make him unsuitable as a CB. He's far more reliable and effective in front of the back four. Unfortunately, Robertson's injury might preclude that option for now.

Ajayi's high market value is as a central defender provided he can eliminate the occasional blip that he is still prone to. He isn't enough of a ballplayer to command a big fee as a midfielder but that is where he can add most value for us. If we can field a back two of Robertson and Raggett I would play Ajayi in midfield every week. Raggett isn't quick but he is very solid and Robertson is both solid and mobile, and they give you a left/right combination. Raggett seems to be close to being ready and Robertson was taken off yesterday as a precaution so hopefully we are not far away from being able to go with that.

Ajayi is a Centre back, he'll be sold as a one. Emergency midfielder but if Raggett is fit could see Semi in front of the defence, Vaulks further forward. Sounds like Robertson coming off yesterday was precautionary. Newell could be out longer. We haven't got a natural left sided wide player apart from Newell. I'd like to see Hinds given the call. Only thing about playing Ajayi in midfield it's holding back the progress of Wiles. He's a player who could keep us up.

Forde & Palmer will be surplus in January. Time to push Hinds in front of them in the pecking order.

centre back for me too. Never going to be any kind of midfielder. That role is very seldom used the way Ajayi plays it and for good reason-it is often a very defensive and unbalanced formation. I remember the revelation when Ledley king played there a few times for England. It, however, was only suitable for a few games and soon it became a burden and England sacrificed a lot of width and attack...not too unusual for England though!
