They are often cited as a club similar in size to us who manage to do well in The Championship, giving hope that we can march them. A couple of things mark them out as very different to us. Firstly, they have made many millions from selling players in recent seasons. Players like Andre Gray, Scott Hogan, James Tarkowski, and John Egan (sold to the Blades recently). Literally tens of millions between them. That obviously gives them money to reinvest. Secondly, their owner Matthew Benham - a multi millionaire who made his money owning online betting businesses - has supported them to the tune of over £100m. Compare to us. How much have we made from player transfers in the last ten years? Maybe broken even? And wealthy though Mr Stewart is compared to most people, and grateful though we are to him for all he has done, he probably can't compete with Mr Benham. And Brentford are one of the smaller clubs in the division. That's what we are up against. It doesn't mean we can't finish above three other teams over a 42 game season, but we have to understand that we are minnows in this division and it won't be easy.

Sorry to dampen your dissertation. Ain't it 46 games to play in the Championship?

Didn't they used to play a 42 games' season way back in the 20th century?

I've just woken up from a long sleep. But it wasn't that too long ago. That's it. It must be the chess. Yes, the chess. I'm playing too much chess.

You're right Smiler. But as well as having done very well in the transfer market and having an exceedingly rich owner, if you look at their wages to turnover ratio (2015) it is 166% compared to RUFC's 74%. This allowed them to bring in players on high wages (and we know this tends to be the key issue when attracting new players) regardless of the amount of money the club was generating. This adds to the inequity in the way the EFL allows clubs to operate and how responsible clubs like Rotherham suffer as a result and always will unless something changes dramatically.

Having said that, it makes success that much sweeter when we punch above our weight and beat the clubs who behave less than genuinely. It also makes sympathy difficult when such clubs get into financial strife.

Of course it is 46 games.  I made a mistake.  Thanks for being there to correct me.

lets hope yates turns a corner at carlisle and lets hope wiles hinds and macginley get a chance

Well stick a pin in my Yorkshire Pudding! I've only gone and got all excited about the start of the new season.
Yet some excuses are spilling out already before we've kicked a ball in the new Championship season. It's true, we cannot match the spending power of other clubs competing in the Championship. C'mon guys, please save the excuses for now or I'll have to destroy my season ticket/card.
But not today though.

It's Yorkshire Day!

Happy Yorkshire Day!

Brentford do it there way, have a really good manager. We can only make best out of our budget. We'll be as fit as most sides this season, just abit of quality we are lacking. Just seeing who we bring in to hopefully make the difference between being out of the bottom 3 all season. A holding midfielder, Duane Holmes on the Right & a progressive striker will do me.

Looking forward to the new season. Been a long summer. UTM

I just wanted to put the often made comparisons to Brentford into perspective. They may get similar crowds to us, but they have a lot more financial muscle. No excuses. Just facts. I too am looking forward to the new season. One or two of the big budget teams may well implode, and we might carry our momentum from last season into this. I think we have a fair chance of finishing 21st or better. I just think the best mindset for the new season is to give it our best go and stay behind this manager and his players even if the going is tough from time to time because the chances are that it will be. That unity could be one of our strengths. Anything above bottom six would be astonishingly good, but Warne and his team kept surprising most of us last season so who is to say they can't do so again?

I expect fight and passion as a gimme and Warney and his staff nothing less, will give credit to the players too as they've already shown in abundance they're willing to do that. Yes we'll come up short many times and get beaten by technically more clever, better coached players who ply their trade in a different class of working evnvironment and play home games in stadiums as intimidating as they come. But as long as we've shown the spirit to never give up, that's all we can ask isn't it? (on the field).

I think more importantly (because I don't expect a Warney team to be anything but the above), we need to see and hear about real progress off the field. The cloth has been cut, the waste reduced, we now need to hear it from the board what progress is being made behind the scenes and see evidence of lessons learned, and how we are improving / investing in the working environment to attract a better calibre of player. Roundwood is a start, but it still needs to be so much better. As for G&C, just burn the rest of it and have done with it. Are we really maximising the revenue from the stadium? - vacant units etc. So much can be done - lets see use this Championship status this time to make real strides - it's the only way we can become remotely sustainable.
