Real shame - he deserves minutes silence on Saturday, a true Miller's hero.

He was a classy player, Rod Fern.

Saturday will be a good day to take a handkerchief to the game. No doubt a minutes silence (or applause) for Rod Fern and John McGlashan, and its also the game where supporters who passed away in the last 12 months are remembered. That of itself is very emotive. Its one of the things the club does well from a club/supporter relationship point of view.

Such sad sad news. The unforgettable 'Rod the nod" Fern, ghosting in behind a defender, signed from Chesterfield, was wasting in the reserves and brought back in from the cold by Ian Porterfield, the rest is history.

As well as the goals remembered, I was one of the hundreds waiting to get through the turn stiles at Carlisle, 80/81 season. We missed the kick off and after about 10 minutes a huge roar went up, we all thought they had scored, when a Miller appeared over the wall from inside shouting to us all outside "One nil..Fern" and a huge roar went up from outside too….we'd clinched the title. 3rd Division Champions. It still brings a lump to the throat the memory of it. God bless you Rod Fern.

I don't know how to put this clip on the site but this is one for you old ins. Where you there? I was only 11 years old at the time but there is Fern playing against us.
A packed Millmoor, when players wore shirt numbers indicating the position they played. A different game back then and arguably a much more entertaining game, anyway enjoy:-

How we could do with someone like Rob Fern today! What a great player and a natural goalscorer. Calypso, thanks for the link - great footage. However, I'd only just managed to overcome the nightmares following Steve Downes' miss but it's now all come flooding back!
