Football matters - Millers v Gillingham - horror show or cake walk?

The Gills are currently languishing in the bottom half of League One. Should we fear them? Should we show them too much

respect? No and No. We should play to our strengths. However, we are conceding the odd soft goal.

Will it be a horror show or  cake walk? I hope it's the latter. But I'm not  writing off the Gills.

2-2 final score.

That was one helluva horror show. It was a piece of cake for the Gills. More soft goals conceded by us. Four goals scored. Unfortunately they weren't evenly distributed. We weren't on our game today. A couple of our players had a nightmare of a game.

All the back four were poor, as was the keeper but the thing that worried me more was our midfield, Potter & Towell were awful.

Garbage really…………….I was wondering when we would take the foot off the pedal, being 4th was getting worrying for some in my opinion.

Poor display. We should have learned the lesson from Blackburn that Newell is a winger and can't cut it in the middle - missed Vaulks for me. No one bombing on from Moore winning headers either. Just a **** display really and evidence we have a way to travel.

My opinion for what it's worth is Warnie has not got managerial nous and we will suffer ,it was obvious after 15mins we were goinng to struggle Forde and Williams should have been dragged off never seen the ball given away so cheaply, Mattock a b******g disgrace reckon he must have caught his missis with milkman played as if he didn't want to be there that lad as a problem .

I have no problem with Warne's style of management. I would have picked the same side today apart from Forde who should have been on the bench and Taylor should have started. We gifted them the first goal with Moore missing a clearing header and perhaps Rodak should have tried to punch clear. This played straight into Gillingham's hands who played a perfect rearguard game, giving us no time on the ball in important areas and hitting us on the break. The lack of movement in our midfield was dreadful, resulting in masses of passes across the back four and no penetration at all. Forde had an absolute nightmare and to be honest, no-one on the Rotherham side deserved 5 out of 10 and there just wasn't a man of the match. It was the most lacklustre performance since Charlton and it was a horrible game to watch.

To top it all Mattock showed his total lack of grey matter. Having just had a blast from the Ref after disputing a foul, he then lunges in for a certain yellow and follows it up with an unprofessional, petulant display which got him a second yellow - in exactly the same spot as he got his second yellow not too long ago. He should be ashamed of himself as we had pulled ourselves back into the game and there was a chance we might have stolen a point. As it happens, the free kick he gave away led to the passage of play which presented them with their 3rd and killed the game.

When 11 of your players put in sub par performances, it doesn't matter who the manager is, you just have to put it down to a bad day at the office and hope that it's just a one off.

I frigging well hope it is a one off because that performance was beyond awful. Get a left back in January because if Purrington is injured all the time & Mattock can't stay on the pitch due to his stupidity we'll need one. Ihiekwe & Wood have been good of late but they were dreadful today. O'Donnell is a better keeper than Mr Punch. Forde & Towell were anonymous, Newell in flashes was good but his decision making? AAAAGGGGHHH. Felt sorry for Kieffer today, feeding on scraps but still got a goal. Finally Mr Warne, please please please don't play one up front at home v a bottom 4 side, give Ball a go playing in a front two with Kieffer. Here endeth the lesson.

If we lose Kiefer then a cheeky bid for that number 9 they had today might give us a replacement that we could afford. I'm sure I have seen that kid before too, like he's played for us.

That was a terrible game. Utterly frustrating. Nothing went well. My observations are;-
1. We have now leaked 9 goals in 3 games. That has to stop.
2. I don't get the preference for Rodak over O'Donnell. O'D got dropped for doing not much wrong. Today Rodak was poor. It will be interesting to see who starts at Doncaster (Crewe won't be a guide).
3. Has Mattock got more than half a brain? Totally unprofessional. Unforgivable. Not the first time.
4. When seven or eight players all have bad days you're in bother.

New Yorkshire - I said exactly that to my brother at the match. I thought he had a great game!

We had Eaves on loan from Bolton a few years back . He wasnt as big ( or as effective back then tho) Thought only Potter and Moore could hold their head up after the final whistle today. That keeper is awful . Shud have pulled newell and Forde off at ht for taylor and ball . Warney seems to rate Forde ... cant see why if im honest. No pace, doesnt beat a man, cant cross past first man... ended up our centre backs putting crosses in !

Just watched the goals back. The first goal is absolutely dreadful. A floated cross to the back of the six yard box where we had three or four six foot plus players defending, and a relatively small player gets a free header without jumping. Really poor.

I always think Forde is quite a negative selection. Taylor is quick, Ball is tricky and skillful, JCH is big and strong. All have their faults but all have something that makes them a threat. Forde doesn't have a particular attribute to get excited about, but he is workmanlike. A bit of a 'safe' but uninspiring option.

Is it only me who thinks towell has been poor recently?? I liked the look of him when he first came, but performances have dropped from him IMO, I think we need to send the scouts out to find a keeper as both of our keepers dont give me much confidance, Also with mattock banned, is it time to give youngster Hinds ago 🤔

Look it is the same managerial mistakes that are being repeated, managers have favourite players and favourite tactics, for me it is this that weakens our team leading to us losing points.

1. The goalkeeper - Rodak is not good enough, doesnt talk to his defenders and looks a complete bag of nerves. O' Donnell is the better keeper and shouldn't have been dropped after 2 clean sheets out of 3 games. He needs a run in the team until Jan if it isn't working go and get another experienced keeper in Jan - Look what Camp did for us. It is poor management to keep swapping them.

2. The left side - Mattock is ok whilst Purrington is injured but you can't play Forde in front of him. Forde is an awful player, he can't control a ball or pass, he fails to beat the first man with crosses 2 out of 3 times, should only play if all other players at the club are unavailable. All 3 goals from the left side again.

3. Williamss is either brilliant or awful - when he is awful he needs to come off early, taking Towel off leaving Williams on was a poor decision

4. Set peices - Bring in an expert it is killing us, this level of football a large percentage of goals are scored from set pieces yet we are awful at defending them and creating chances from them. Twice yesterday we had a set piece and nearly conceeded from it as the first ball was weak allowing them to break.

These are mistakes, we keep making them and they are easy to fix, football is a simple game made hard by over thinking it.

Pretty much my view Glenn.... hopefully a one-off.

Warne should learn from that if he's going to improve as a manager : for sure, that Forde is not a right winger (although I think he's still a decent player in the middle)... Rodak should be second choice goalie... and even K Moore showed he's human afterall - at least two headers he missed I could have scored, and two bad passes that should have put our player one-on-one with their goalie,

As for Gillingham... it wasn't pretty but it worked and they wound up our players good and proper and fooled the ref.. their tactics worked and we had no answer on the day. Hopefully we'll learn from it.
