I thought that was a terrific game between two decent sides. We shaded it but 2-0 flattered us slightly. Very encouraging that we can have two key central midfield players missing and still get a positive result. Big shouts from me for O'Donnell and Wood, who were both rock solid.
It was easy to see why Scunny are tipped to do well again. When they moved the ball quickly they were a real threat.
David Ball has a big contribution to make for us. He looked slightly off the pace at times which is to be expected, but he is a really clever footballer and has that bit of quality about him.
Agree Smiler - I thought it was a great game. After the initial 15 minutes when it looked as though we were going to take them to the cleaners, S'thorpe came into their own and made it a really competitive match. Their left back was sensational.
The absence of Potter and Frecks became increasingly evident and we lacked that cool control in midfield. O'Donnell had his best game for Rotherham - a couple of top class saves and catches under pressure. Just needs to sort out his kicking game. Vaulks' goal was wonderful but I thought he let himself down with some wayward passing - as did Williams on occasions. I thought Mattock had a great game also and his body block of one of their attempts late in the game showed great commitment. Towell started and finished really well but was a bit quiet in the middle of the game. He's definitely got a great engine and appears to love playing for us.
Ball's contribution for Moore's goal was sublime and when he's got his match fitness back, he'll be difficult to drop.
Had a drink with a few S'thorpe fans before the game and there's some really close similarities between our two clubs from the perspectives of budget, catchment area and aspirations. Their team will do well this season and will play much worse and win games.
