If We Were To Get Promoted..........?

For a start, as a unit I think that the team we have at present would have fared far better than some of the comedians who represented us last season.  But where would we need to strengthen to ensure we don't have a repeat of last season?

A new competent keeper would be the most important acquisition in my book (BTW - anyone who watched the Channel 5 football highlights last night will understand that we are not the only team who have someone less than dependable between the sticks - I heard the name Roos mentioned after one blunder!). Second on the shopping list would be an experienced but young enough CB who could work with the young potentials that we have at present. Next I'd make a healthy bid for Towell who I think is very influential in our midfield and will become more and more important as the season moves on.  All this transfer activity would be made on the understanding that we had already secured the permanent services of Moore - whatever the cost.

If any transfer money was still available I'd look to bring in a replacement for Frecks who might eventually join the management team and someone to play alongside Moore up front.

Unlike the Evans' era I'd like to see the squad largely retained and use the confidence and bond that has been built to carry us through the first 6 months in the Championship - much like SUFC.

After recent performances it's something we might have to seriously consider over the coming months. So get your thinking caps on because PW is going to need all the advice he can muster!

Onwards and upwards!

We will always have the problem of finances we just can’t compete. Having said that this team would give teams more problems that the team last season. I also think Warne has learned a lot and would be better prepared than last time. You have to give Warne tremendous credit because this team is fitter stronger and more together than last season so if we went up I think at least we would be more competitive if that would be enough is debatable.  Got to agree.  I applaud the way we are re-building but the gulf is a huge one.  The present group of players would struggle week in week out in The Championship and I doubt we are equipped to add the players that would be needed to do much about it.  I am enjoying League 1 and wouldn't mind at least one more season in it before we have another go at competing with clubs ten times our size.

Couldn't agree more, we need to have a couple of confidence boosting seasons in L1 for players and fans.

This is a bit of a dilemma isn't it. Its a sport and we have to compete. We compete well, gain promotion to a place where we can't compete.

The question is, will we put the brakes on and stop competing if promotion starts to look like a distinct possibility and to be avoided? And if that becomes the case, wouldn't that be some kind of moral fraud on behalf of the club?

I'd say your ready for promotion when your ready. The case against last time was the way in which a winning squad with a can do attitude was dismantled one way or another. The replacements were nowhere near ready and the rest is history.

I suspect this time, if we were to win promotion, then I think Warne and Co would strengthen where needed and not throw themselves into a complete rebuild like the previous three years…..It could be different next time.

Not wishing to rake over the past Calypso but it is important to learn lessons from the past.

I think with hindsight we had in Evans (love him or hate him) a manager who had a high turnover of players to begin with. An astonishing number really. In his defence we went up after finishing fifth, and we probably did need to add to the squad after going up in consecutive seasons. Perhaps with hindsight we went too much down the route of bringing in players who had a track record of playing at Championship level. Unfortunately the only players we could afford on our budget who fit that description were probably past their best and/or injury prone and although they may have done their best they weren't up to it. It was difficult then to rebuild once things started to go wrong, and I suspect we had spent most of the kitty on high wages and signing on fees.

The way that Barnsley and Sheff Utd have gone about things has been a bit different. Barnsley have gone for young, talented and hungry players. It may not work for them this season because ultimately money is a big factor and they have a smaller budget than most but I suspect they won't cripple the club in trying. Of course outside investment may change the landscape for them. United have the size and platform to compete but seem to have a good mix of youth and experience and have added to the promotion winning team without demolishing it.

At the end of the day the way that money is in football now the gaps between all of the divisions are getting bigger, and going up and being competitive in the next league up will always be a challenge.

I agree that you have to aim as high as you can and if a chance to go up comes along you have to try and take it and then give it the best go you can but still try and plan for the medium to long term - not easy when fans judge you only on last weeks result/performance.

I would go as to say remember Division 3 after we won the 4th Division, we tore it up for a while then got rid of Williamson and Mendonca - if that wasn't flagrant throwing away going to Division 2 (Champ for the young uns), I don't know what was.

So... my point... wouldn't be the first time.

Has anyone seen the projected figures for Championship funding compared to that of League One over the next ten years? It is ridiculous. The 80% 12% 8% funding formula that was agreed back when the Prem Lg started is now well out of date. it didn't matter so much when the amounts were relatively small but now, as you can imagine, it is off the scale!

Essentially you are going to have The Championship as an EPL 2 meaning clubs coming up into the Champ from Lg 1 just can't compete.

The EFL are aware that this is happening and the problem is that voting for a new funding system would require the agreement of clubs in the Championship but why would they vote against the status quo when they are raking it in.

Anyway if you did go up I think you should look to keep Towell and Moore and look at someone like Sean Raggett at the back who is unlikely to be given a fair chance at Norwich. He reminds me of a young Matt Elliott.

Its all part of the grand scheme to have 2 top leagues in this country and the rest part time.

The elite don't want 4 Divisions of English football, it really is ripping up 100 years of tradition, history and the rest for the elite few.

So sad
