First off, I didn't want Warne as manager. The reasons for my opinion have been well do***ented over the months and done to death on other threads, so no need to go over a debate thats been done to death.
Here we sit, 9th in the table played 7 won 4 lost 3 with 12pts. Fifteen goals for 9 against and some attractive attacking football being played; Is this Rotherham United I'm talking about? How much it changes outlooks to be able to make that observation eh.
So have we all now accepted Warne as our manager? So far, excepting the odd slip up and a bit of bad refereeing luck, we're sitting pretty. Early days, yes. Work in progress, yes. Defence, in my opinion, looking better but still needs work. But has the guy done enough to win us all over?
I'm warming to him and happy to eat loads of humble pie. What about the rest of you doubters, has he done enough yet to convince you that TS made the right decision this time round and was not just taking the cheapest option? Is the jury still out?
I was also against Warne's appointment I think he is a terriific bloke and have all the time in the world for him, but for me there was not a single good reason to give him the job.
Do I want him to do well? Of course I do. He may not have been my choice but I will get behind any Rotherham manager.
I think that given what he has had to work with he is doing a really good job so far. We are trying to play attacking football. The commitment is there to see. There are smiles back on faces and a bit of pride has been restored. Credit where it is due. We are on a bit of a high at the moment. A good time to hold a fans forum a cynic might think!
Well done to all concerned for the job done so far. Keep it going!
Like virtually everyone else I was dead set against his appointment & his win % in the Championship seemed to prove to me he was not the right fit for the job. But....after struggling a little bit in the early part of the season what a turnaround. As has been said, this humble pie tastes nice & I'd be delighted for the guy to continue to prove me wrong.
I'm in the not yet camp, too inconsistent and weak at the back. Use subs better - 4-0 up could have swapped 3 out at half time with Bradford game looming. Proctor injury should have triggered a new loan striker.
Things are looking up that is for sure, but our defence means we will achieve mid-table at best if we keep scoring. We leak silly goals and crosses from the left back area is the biggest issue. Mattock simply doesn't stop crosses, his positioning is awful too many yards from the wide player to recover in time and both centrebacks can onl head forward. So crosses beat them too many times, add to that keepers that don't come and dominate the six yard box, leads to goals. Now we had a clean sheet at Portsmouth and then we changed the keeper and left full back. Yes we won 2 our of 3 games and going forward we look good, but all at least 3 out of the 4 goals in those 3 games came from left hand crosses. Purrington is a better long term option as full back than Mattock in my opinion. We need to keep a few more clean sheets and these issues are obvious and are not being addressed.
So is Warne doing ok? Yes
Has he proven himself yet? of course not, it is too soon but it is looking better
I hope he proves me and others wrong and becomes a great manager for our club

Nice post Derby. I agree 100%. I have described my concern with Mattock by saying that he 'knocks off' sometimes. I think what you have described falls into that description. His decision making/concentration is suspect at times. The rash tackle that got him a red card in the last minute of injury time was inexplicable. I think he is tidier on the ball than Purrington, but I wonder whether he has it in him to work on and improve the sides of his game that are poor. Purrington may not be the finished article, but he has shown signs of improvement and I think he deserves an extended run in the team. Of the two (and they both have strengths and weaknesses) I would pick him. He has to play on Saturday so lets see if he can put in a solid display.
On the right side, Vaulks may be an option to fill in at full back but he isn't the long term answer. He just doesn't have the instinct needed to know what to do and when, like when to cover in behind the centre backs, when to pick up or pass runners on and so on. Easy to pick individual examples out of games I know and I am not in any way blaming him for the defeat at Bradford, but just to illustrate the point have a look at Bradfords goal. Others were at fault for not marking, but Vaulks had all the play in front of him before the cross came in and he was a spectator. An instinctive full back might have got across and covered the danger off. The same with Bury's second goal at our place. Not a dig at Vaulks at all, he is filling in, but I think those who think he may be the best right back at the club are mistaken. From what I have seen, when he is fit that is definitely Shaun Cu mmings.
With me, I'm not sure if it's a case of Warne winning me over. After his disastrous predecessors, I felt sorry for him but was hopeful that he couldn't do any worse. I disregard anything from last season as he had no control over the dross that he was left with. However, I thought his dealings in the transfer market pre season were smart, demonstrated that he had a 'plan' of how he wanted the team to play and proved that he had the nous to get transfers across the line. Additionally, he cleared out a lot of rubbish which had been sucking blood out of the club for too long.
As for tactics, substitutions etc, the one thing that is clear is that he learns quickly and takes action. He recognised that the RB and Keeper positions were key reasons for many of our defeats and goals conceded. He's now got cover in those positions which makes us far more solid. He's strengthened the midfield with Towell, added some skill with Potter and Williams and allowed Taylor and Frecklington much greater freedom to support the attack. The Proctor signing was a master stroke as was the loan of Moore. He's obviously got an eye for talent which others might not see. The problem at CB is a combination of inexperience and age - we might have the ingredients to fix it with Ajeyi and Onariase - but there's a coaching element there which needs to be implemented soonest.
What we have is a raw young manager who is learning quickly. He has a good football background and is intelligent and communicates well (have you ever listened to Wednesday's manager on PorG after a game!!?). The thing about Warne is that he has great potential and the signs are good that he could turn into a very good manager. Of course, we could have better, but we are RUFC and our bank account was emptied long ago by Warne's illustrious predecessors. For me he has my full support and with a couple of tweaks, he has the makings of an excellent team who could mount a challenge this season.

I agree with your main summary Derby, Purrington preferred at full back and need to sort out centre backs & defending set peices and crosses...
In terms of Warne - I'd like to wait another 10 games or so and see if the early promise continues and he can see, then fixes, the defensive issues. I certainly have seen enough positives to give him a proper run of games (unlike last year's disaster...)
Things I do like:
- We look like we can score in every game - We are not reliant on one striker - I think if we had kept Ward and hoped he and JCH would score enough, we would already be bottom of the league. - The signings brought in, when compared with last two seasons, are generally much better - I assume he has played a part in this - Despite issues identified in defence above, we do look better in both full back positions when Mattock doesn't play. - He has the team giving 100% for the shirt - good stuff
i like others expressed concerns about the appointment of PW and RB. but the signs of improvement are there we just need to get a defensive coach to sort out the defence
the team are gelling but like others have said if we lose moore we will be toothless in attack as that would leave us just da ball as a decent striker
yates may come good under warne but jch is over hyped and self important yes he was injured last season but has hardly come backripping up trees when given a chance too
The scrutiny in football these days is horrid, I don't remember it being like that 20yrs ago?
Sooner they bring in a 'transfer window' for managers the better - they've got to be afforded the time - nay more time than they're getting - especially for those guys lower down, they aren't millionaires and I'm sure Warney still has a mortgage to pay for!
I think Warney's trying to do the right things under quite strict resources. I don't believe a word TS says about top budget this that and the other, and lets face it why should we have one? - Since the building of NYS it's been the wool over the eyes of some very ingrained wrong doing at the club, and hopefully that is being put right. But we've made some very costly mistakes as we all know and no doubt we're still under the influence of that.
Warney needs 2 years, I'm confident if he's given that we'll be in a much better place, he's an intelligent bloke and surrounded himself with ex players who know what it means to be Rotherham United. Yes some things will work and some won't but he will reflect and will get better as a manager - he has my support even if we finish 12th the next 2 years, as long as we see backend development continuing and a proper pathway put in place that the academy kids can actually break in to.
I think thats the key to it all Ex, developing the club off the pitch, having the right business plan and the people to see it through.
It surprises me that this wasn't the case before, baring in mind TS' proven business success; I know a sport is different in many ways but it is a business non the less and long term success can only be achieved by having the drive, passion and ambition to see it through and surrounding oneself with the best talent and like minded people to help develop that culture. The fact that we haven't got that is glaringly obvious and in my opinion is the reason why the club has never sustained hard won promotion to the upper reaches of the game. Promotion we have had yes, but I believe that is in spite of rather than because of good leadership and business acu-men. Ronnie and Evans with their strength of character drove it through until the steam ran out.
Many believe that L1&L2 is our natural level. I don't buy into that thesis. We can be whatever the Chairman and directors want us to be, but they have to give the fans a product to buy into first, then they will come through the gate. I'm delighted Warne is showing promise and delighted to be eating humble pie and am almost won over. I just hope TS is going to be there to support him and his team likewise.
