To be honest Portsmouth were poor, but no doubt we we defended really well. Hopefully with a bit more confidence we will get more comfortable with the ball because we still gave it away too much.
Humble pie for me with the goal from Taylor. I have been critical of his end product but there was no messing with that finish, and he also put some very handy crosses in. I think some of the criticism of him has been justified, but if he can add that sort of end product consistently to his pace and work rate he will be a real asset.
Marking a bit unit like Portsmouth had up front was bread and butter for Wood who I thought was really good.
Purrington better than Mattock.
***mings was very sound and stopped a lot of crosses at source.
The word 'solid' sums that performance up for me.
Still work in progress, but a big well done all round.
Great Millers' following on a wet and windy Portsmouth Sunday afternoon. Their enthusiasm was reflected by the team who put in an excellent counter - attacking first half display and a solid defensive effort in the second period. Impossible to pick out individuals as everyone put in a massive shift. Congratulations to Paul Warne on his team selection and on outdoing Jackett tactically! His reaction at the end said everything. He now has a comfortable headache regarding his team selection for next Saturday. Wood is going to take some shifting!
I was at the last away victory all those months ago and this one was just as enjoyable.
This is still a team in transition and it will get better. For now, celebrate the victory, get behind the lads and enjoy the ride. After all, it's only football.
Onwards and upwards! !
Hurrah indeed - good win. I'm not getting excited until we've won 2 on the bounce. Got to say Taylor looked ok today, at least he attempted to cross the ball at least twice.
Credit where credit is due I thought we were very good today, only issue was the subs, but it worked out ok in the end. I prefer these two full backs as well, and at last we play the formation some of us have been crying out for and we keep a clean sheet and win. So well done to warne for making the changes
No criticism of anybody who played today, but I think when he is fit David Ball will end up playing in behind a lone front man (or the most advanced of a central midfield three - however you want to look at it).
For me the big success story of the season so far is Ihiekwe who is improving with every game.
I agree that the two full backs today were an improvement. Purrington got lucky when he fell asleep at the back post and the winger missed a free header on about 40 mins but otherwise sound. ***mings just very very steady, which is always a virtue in a defender.
Had whatsisface put that in when O'Donnell made a right mess at that cross (the usual catastrophic error from someone), it would have been a different game.
On the mistakes the league table would look like F8 A3 - Pts 3, it really has to stop. Players are not robots and make genuine errors every game, but ours seem to get punished time and again.
A welcome 3 points no doubt, but it's far from rosy. Also a concern that despite 4-1-4-1 we had hell on keeping any kind of possession 2nd half, that is something not akin to us up to now this season as I've praised Warney for getting this better, we have had more of the ball for the most part in games this season, so this was weird?
