I Don't Know If This Is Allowed, But

I need to say something positive after last night's game. I realise that Friendlies aren't a great indication of what is to come, but they do give fans a chance to see new signings and to guage the fitness of the old guard. The game against the Blades was a competitive match with both sides commited and intent on winning. The most notable positive for RUFC was the superb performance of the centre back pair of Ajeyi and Ihiekwe - both athletic, fit, cool on the ball and dominant in the air. Add a very competent performance from Emmanuel at RB and all of a sudden the most notable weakness from last season, the Defence, appears to have been addressed. Other positives included Ball - some great touches, awareness and skill, Moore - a big unit with a big heart in the Andy Carroll mode and Potter who grew in confidence in midfield. Vaulx looks like he's bulked up massively but he was mainly off the pace. The two goals we conceded were pantomime affairs. The first an unfortunate deflection but scored whilst 10 replacements were lined up on the halfway line ready to come on. It's fair to say the players' concentration was less than 100% at that stage. The second, a mystifying error by Fisher - I'll say no more. Jerry Yates' goal was a well taken striker's effort. All in all an enjoyable game which went some way to suggesting that Warne has drawn together a decent squad which looks like it wants to play together and has some good levels of skill in the right areas. Midfield is the key area where the right personnel, formation and tactics need to be resolved - in my opinion. Onwards and upwards.

I wasn't there so thanks for that report, and, it is good to read some positives. The defence gives me the heebie jeebies and I remain to be convinced Warnes has sorted it, This was a friendly of course so if there is to be a 'pantomime' then this was the time to have them and get them sorted out; we can't afford a repetition of last seasons shenanigans.

You have to ask yourself, if we 'continue' to ship goals, whether this is indeed down to the individuals we keep putting there or the coaching?

We had step off Stubbs and in your face wild Warnock, hoping Warney can teach the happy medium - if the team gets confident that clean sheets are not beyond us, and also that if we concede we can always score - we'll be onto a winner. The big take of particularly last season was how much we conceded first, and that once that went behind neither players, staff or supporters had any confidence of turning it around. That itself has to be put right, and it's not about individuals and their 'quality' or 'skill set'.

Ex - I'm afraid SUFC's second goal last night was 'all' about individuals, quality and skill-set in that two of the three were totally absent. You had to see it to believe it!
