Gainsborough Trinity 0 v 1 Rotherham

Jamie Proctor’s fourth goal in Millers’ colours proved enough to ensure his new club’s winning record remained at 100% following wins in Austria and at Parkgate.

The visitors were issued a couple of early warning signs from their non-league counterparts, with manager Dave Frecklington, uncle of Millers skipper Lee, having his side fired up and energetic in typical Frecklington fashion.

Young forward Jerry Yates, deployed in a role on the left hand side of midfield, conjured up the Millers best chance of note just before the 20-minute mark. There looked to be little danger when the hosts hoisted Joe Newell’s corner away to the edge of the area, but Yates picked it up and unleashed a thunderbolt of an effort which had the goalkeeper beaten before flashing inches wide of the target.

The breakthrough did come for the Millers just after 30 minutes had elapsed as Proctor found the net for the fourth time in his new side’s colours. A burst down the right flank by Yates saw him latch onto a ball in the channel, before the former Bolton forward lashed an effort goalwards, which ended up in the back of the net at the second attempt after a block from the initial attempt.

I'll give you my report Wotsisname as someone who stood and watched it.

Defensively we were all over the place and should have been behind before we got our goal. We made stupid individual mistakes at the back and a better side than GT would have punished us. The defenders were waving their arms at each other after for the first fifteen minutes, and it all looked horribly familiar.

Proctor is big and strong and will be a right handful for any defender. Emmanuel looks like he enjoys getting forwards. Joe Newell was a class apart in terms of ability and strolled through it.

I suspect we are going to be quite a big, strong side that will go fairly direct at times, hitting and running channels, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

I guess the object of the exercise was match fitness and of course it was probably only half a first team. Just as you shouldn't get too excited by winning pre-season games, you perhaps shouldn't read too much into the things that look rough.

Oh dear smiler….problems in the defence continue. I've had my fears since the end of season, we still seem to have the same defence which was the worst in Millers history.

There were positives to come out of the game Calypso. Proctor clearly has an appetite for work and is tremendously strong. I don't know how many goals he has in him but I like his physicality and I guess other forwards would enjoy playing off him.

The down side is definitely the defence. There is that constant feeling that is hard to describe but you can sense it in the players and the crowd that we could slip up at any time. Purrington got his pocket picked trying to shield the ball out and they should have scored from it. O'Donnell got robbed second half messing about outside his area and was lucky to be given a free kick. Emmanuel completely lost his man at the back post from a first half free kick and they should have scored from it. Ihiekwe (excuse spelling if wrong - and this apart he looked ok to me) mis-controlled a simple pass late on and brought the forward down - it might have been a red card in a league game. A couple of times early on we gave the ball away cheaply trying to play out from the back. I remember Wood in particular doing that, although he was shouting at the forwards for a lack of movement.

They are just basics. When you get them wrong it sets a tone, and makes everyone nervous which makes it more likely it will happen again. It becomes a vicious circle. For me it is a real concern.

For me, for the time being at least, if in doubt put it in the stand or bang it long. Better that than mess about and give stupid goals away. Lets make it objective number one to be miserly at the back and hard to beat. You can get a few results and get something going off the back of that.

Biggest weakness for me is right full back, we have no experience in this position. An half decent winger will skin both Fisher and Emmanuel who both look what they are, raw young players with a lot to learn.
On the left Purrington shows a lot of promise but will struggle to replace Mattock at present. All of which suggests that the defence is still a work in progress. Only time will tell if Warne has got it right in relation to the fullback positions. In midfield and up front I believe that we have plenty of options. I confidently believe that Proctor and Ball will do the business and will be a partnership to be feared at this level.
I make no predictions as to where we will finish this season as that's not my style, but I do believe that Paul is trying to put together a side that can compete and dare I say it entertain the fans. And after last season wouldn't that be a real bonus.

It's good to get a report from people who were there, thanks.

Another two decent results, yes, I know its against non-league opposition but, the guys have just come from a gruelling training camp, flew home Sunday, trained Monday and Tuesday (Tuesday mornings session was only hours before the game, which I understand was very hard and would obviously not happen during the season) and we still came away with victories. I'm sure a few mistakes can be expected as the team had not rested or prepared as they normally would have.
I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that we do not get any injuries, its a fine line between pushing the players 'to their limits' and not 'over them'!

I think you will find Richie Barker was there as the reference to the 'tough training session' was taken from his interview on the official site.

Apart from the locations and  individuals relaying information to interested parties, what's the difference?

Maybe my original post should have said 'It's good to get a report from people who were there and also the people who posted information on the game. Thanks'?

Apologies if you took offence in thinking your contribution was not being recognised, it was not intentional at all and a genuine comment.
