Dingles '71 and won 1-0. Was 5 at the time. Sat on wall at back of Tivoli - remember it being very noisy and luckily wasn't in the surge when we scored.
No idea who it was against but my first game was in about 1970 when I was two or three. Like NY, I remember sitting on the wall at the back of the Tivoli (with my cousins). My earliest memories of games are from when I was about five (in about 1972/3) and are of watching players like Carl Gilbert and Ron Wigg. I can remember when my dad told me that a defender called Bob Delgado had signed for us at about that time, and to my amazement he moved into a house right across the road from us a week later. He was a great guy, but at the time I thought he was a giant! I grew up in North Anston, and for some reason lots of Rotherham players lived out there in the early/mid 70's- people like Delgado, Steve Derrett, Jimmy Goodfellow , and Tommy Spencer. Happy days.
I can't remember who it was against but it was the 59/60 season. I was sat in the stands with my dad and grandad who were big supporters back in the day, but I was more interested in watching the constant twinkle of small sparkles of flame as people lit cigarettes. I was more interested in that than the game, although I couldn't work out why there was only one guy on the pitch dressed in black or why everyone laughed when he fell over. Its not much of a clue but I do remember the opposing team was all in blue kit.
The one thing that sticks in my memory was walking to the ground with my dad, we parked under the road bridge at millmoor and a man with a mobile hotdog stand was at the side of the road as we walked up, every time i smell hotdogs and onions it brings back that night for me.
Happy Days.

Why do "fairground" hot dogs and onions always smell and taste better than those you do at home.Incidentally my first game was Danny Williams testimonial,no idea of the score.
It was certainly 1963, v Doncaster Rovers, I think, in the County Cup. Stood behind the dug outs on a fold up stool my Dad made on nights at Aldwarke Pit
Talking of familiar smells, I could smell pipe tobacco all around and on the approach to Millmoor, especially in the GROUND. (The word 'Stadium' still does not and never did seem fitting for the old girl.)

I think the word Stadium is a post 90's word,I Think when the mackems built the stadium of light most other clubs used the word when they built new grounds.
The saying "thats a proper ground" has been retired.
