Giddings on BBC Football website.

BBC Radio Sheffield sport editor Andy Giddings

Paul Warne has seemed to be the board's overwhelming choice for some time.

Warne has overseen the clubs relegation from the championship, but he shouldn't be fully judged until he's allowed to build his own team.

The direction of the season was set long before he succeeded Kenny Jackett. Recruitment, as ever, is key to success, and he'll be aided by the club's plans to improve the infrastructure.

Although no appointment is universally welcomed by supporters, Warne has retained the lion's share of support he's enjoyed as both a player and coach.

Is this bloke on summat??????

Giddings and his colleagues have swallowed the party line. They are either too lazy to do their own homework or are afraid to upset the people who feed them stories (or both).

The club, together with the press who faithfully report what the club say, have massively misread this situation. Warne has avoided protests and serious overt criticism because (a) his previous service means he has some goodwill and (b) this mess was not of his making. That slack should not however be confused with support.

I know that sometimes boards like this one are not always representative of the wider support, but there is huge opposition to the appointment of Paul Warne as permanent manager. It is a senseless move. It has no basis in logic. It is the latest in a series of very, very poor decisions by the club. With every managerial appointment we change course. We need a man who is a proven winner, or a man on a long-term deal to bring youth through, or a short-termer to get us out of a jam, or a man with fresh ideas, or a man with a proven track record at the level. Now apparently we need a man whose only managerial experience is a four month nightmare, who has no track record at all, no qualifications, and a one year rolling contract which suggests we aren't sure about him at all. The only tick on the positive side for him is that he is a Miller through and through, which needn't even be on the checklist. Being a Blade didn't stop Warnock performing a miracle, and joining from Wednesday didn't stop Porterfield being the best manager I have seen in my time supporting us.

It looks and feels like a shambles.

We all want a bit of pride back and a season that is at least respectable would be a start. The rest of this season doesn't really matter. We need major surgery in the summer and a solid start to next season to break the losing habit. I fear the worst and hope Warne doesn't regret his part in this gamble, for that is what it is. But despite my reservations I hope Warne surprises us all and I wish him all the luck in the world.

As smiler says, I think the press has probably become bored with our situation. If they arent (and I could forgive them if they have) then I also agree they have really missed and failed to report on the grumblings among fans. Under the tenure of this current leadership I would say it is the most significant period and for that reason alone the press need to raise the bar a little.
