Danny ward, the witch and the wardrobe

Confused.

We show no motivation to invest in salaries or recruitment worth much beyond a handful of peas for much of the last 3 seasons and now we are tabling million pound offers for league 2 players and rejecting 1 million pound offers for the great danny ward.

what are we to make of it?

Is it just posturing rejecting the ward offer?

Are we serious about being a force next season and still having a bash this?

of course its easy and maybe somewhat accurate to blame stubbs for the lack of action but then again where was the action when Steve Evans was manager? Was it all used up in loans? If so, and this being the favourite rumour as to his departure (his unwillingness to change) then its seems his policy was working but this one wont. If we are going to spend close to a million on a league 2 player and reject an offer for Danny ward thats great , but, what about the other 7-8 positions we need covering...I may sound rather more unintelligible than usual but I cant quite grasp the money involved. I know we seemed to have a few bids totalling just over 2 million on the table when stubbs was around and maybe it really was all his fault coz I cant think of another answer that makes any sense. If so, this is a pointless post and Im just rehashing what we always thought to some extent. However, im still surprised that if we are really "spending 2 million +" then the idea that the club is in free-fall is wide of the mark...and kenny Jacketts departure is a little more unfathomable

Evaluations are very subjective aren't they? - I think it's probably clear that Ward is going to go for serious money (perhaps the club record?), and I don't think it's the first time a L2 player has gone for serious money up the pyramid.

What scares me is the talent behind the thinking of evaluations and their credentials to effectively do so because they've got it so very wrong previously.

Deffo subjective Ex.

What Im not clear on is the strategy as well as the individual ability to spot a good deal. In some respects the strategy should inform the kind of player we go after in terms of ability and pay.

My main query is why we weren't tabling 1 million pound bids last season or the season before...but the club getting all excited about the record breaking 350k paid for JCH.

Yes Gaz, 2 million... Im afraid to say I wouldnt take it if we have another years option.

No. The thing is he is the perfect age and clearly has talent.

3 million compared to a promotion push next year would be my comparison. Of course, if we cant back that up with more money for signings then yes Id let him go.

Reason I put that figure out there Ian is I think the only way we are going to have any money for signings next year is by letting our "valued" assets go - for the right money of course

You are probably right, so in that case its a question of getting as much for him as possible or keeping him and not getting too much else.

seems if its like that we need to sell him.

I think that despite maybe turning offers down for Ward we know that he is going to be going, and if he is then it makes sense to identify the right replacements in advance.

One thing that nobody has mentioned yet is that if the player wants to leave then he will.  It is no good for us to hang on to him against his will.  Plus his injury record isn't great and he may never have another purple patch like he has had recently.  If Championship clubs are willing to pay such big numbers for him, then he (and his agent) will get a big lump out of it and maybe double or triple his wage with us.  It is all pointing to him leaving, and us getting what we can while we can.

but, if its true about the sell-on clause as Slider has reported then 2 million is simply not enough...unless the clause is let go.
