It seems there is a feeling of inevitability he will go very soon. I wonder why this is. He has had a purple patch in a poor performing team but is he worth a mid table championship team and the likes coming in for him?
Secondly, I have to wonder why we think the club would let him go. What would we get for a player with half a season left on his contract without a huge bidding war , which he will not attract?
If, and I dont personally , we think there is any chance of staying up we should block his move.
If, we think next year is about building and pushing on and up then he has to be made an offer he cannot refuse.
so, how much? No one knows! But, the heart of the matter is how we keep decent but not very good players at this level. If we cannot keep hold of a Danny ward, a Ben Pringle, a Kari Arnason , then we really cannot hope to build a solid base at this level. These are not extravagant players. They are not players who will even fair well in a lower half traditional championship team...a bit depressing but I dont mean to be. Im just trying to highlight the issues, the expectations and the kind of action and investment needed to move up a gear. If Ward goes it will be another huge blow. Not because hes really great and he will go on to be ace and displace the strikers at the next "better" team he goes to, because its highly unlikely he will, unless he drops down to L1, but simple because we have to be attractive enough to keep players of his ability and ratchet up the overall squad level.

Ian - for Danny Ward, read the whole squad. It's the dilemma that RUFC face in January because there is little hope of Championship survival so how do you plan? Ward's thoughts will be along the lines of - chances are RUFC will be relegated so it's probably better for me to depart in January while I'm still part of a Championship side, scoring goals and being able to command a reasonably lucrative fee. If I wait till summer and we're relegated, the shine will have gone off and I may not get the deal I desire. Tony Stewart's thoughts will be similar - I will get more for Ward in January than summer. As much as I'd love him to stay, if Leeds come in with a bid above £1M, I think he'll be history.
Agreed totally. But leeds ? I may be wrong but if they come in with that kind of money then of course the games up.
I'm assuming that it will not be a club that big with that kind of cash...can't blame anyone if this were to happen.
The examples I gave really amounted to players who didn't have to leave and we could add some others to that like Morgan and even Tavs perhaps. ..certainly we have suffered from poor decisions these last 3 seasons. Perhaps at last the penny is dropping with this head of recruitment.
We need to give Jerry Yates a go and get him firing - I've been impressed with him in the very few appearances he's made. If Ward goes we can play Blackstock (who has a 3 yr deal) and Yates. We've also got JCH coming back at some point. Ward is ok but if we get chance of a million quid then let him go.
Million quid .... ur avin a laff . Hes not worth a fraction of that. If we get a bid of £250k he'll be off . How long is he under contract for? Few free agents id be taking a look at .. joey o brien ( since july!) reo coker, tiendalli ..
There's too much flying around to suggest he won't go, not sure what he'd free up in wages too which surely next season on L1 will have to be easily half what it is now. The Blackstock deal is really going to hurt. I also don't think the board will be in a rush any time soon for a push back to the Champ. I remember a handful of seasons in the past when something after Xmas seemed to go dramatically wrong and wonder whether orders on high were being carried out to keep us a winning competitive L1 club rather than a struggling Champ club. The Williamson / Mendoca season after 4th Div championship springs to mind. Until we've sorted out the platform of the club I don't see how any board will want to suffer what we have done
