What sad news, an old style player, combative, gave and expected no quarter. A hard player, some would describe him as dirty, but it was a different game back then and he was tough. He broke up the opponents play and bossed midfield, if the ball was to be won, he would win it. Joined a Millers side that was in the doldrums, (3rd from bottom if I remember) and shortly after took us on that glorious 9 win run that took us to 3rd from top, but oh that penalty miss from him ..... was it against Newcastle? cant remember, only that it was towards the Railway End.
Lets not forget the sliding tackle which occurred just infront of where I was stood in the game against Derby County where the Derby played had his leg broke. To be fair I saw little wrong with the challenge by the standards of the day and the linesman only gave a throw in, only to be overruled by the ref when the seriousness of the injury became apparent. By all accounts he had been booked before a ball was kicked but my memory may be wrong.
I'll always remember him for his never say die spirit, and a will to win. Tough and relentless. I wish we had someone with his calibre in the squad today. Farewell Gerry Gow.
Very sad news indeed. He will always be remembered as being one of the "greats" to have graced the Millmoor pitch and one of my all time favourites. R.I.P. Gerry.
RIP Gerry. If only our 2016 players had Gerry's combative spirit & will to win. Strong in the tackle, Gerry was also a fine player too with a superb range of passing & a hell of a shot too............fond memories
