Perversely, the one team we've beaten this season, Brentford. Since Promotion they've played good attacking exciting football, recruited well, & been consistently top half, all on a similar budget & fanbase to us.....it can be done.
I can't help but come out of retirement to comment on this. Brentford have a wage bill nearly twice ours. They trade at a loss of several million pounds a year. They have been propped up by their mega wealthy owner Matthew Benham to the tune of a reported £76m. By the way, their current manager had no Championship experience before joining them, as is the case with ten of the current top half of the table. Tony made a rod for his own back by propagating the myth that Championship experience is somehow important when appointing a manager. That was a mistake. Anybody who wants to have a pop at our Board wants to have a serious look at themselves. After years of financial turmoil we have a stable club playing in the Championship in a fabulous set up. We might be struggling right now on the pitch but we are not competing on a level playing field. We might have made some bad decisions along the way. That can happen. The club would not expect to be above constructive criticism. I just say be careful what you wish for.
I feel what upsets most people is the fact that here we are, our 3rd season and still not moved forward. We have no established manager, no established squad and no apparent plan of how the club is to develop further. All the evidence seems to point to the opposite, despite the fact that Warnock spoke out about how the club needs to be structured in order to take it forward. Despite all the talk pre season from TS (the last 3seasons come to that) about what we're gonna do etc etc etc nothing seems to have been learned.
Of course I dont know what is happening behind the closed doors of the board room or what is going through TS' mind, but for us, the great unwashed, the proof of the pudding is that we are rock bottom with absolutely little to suggest we are going anywhere except L1....again!!!.
Yes Ts has worked wonders, absolutely no doubt, and what he has built for our club is far and above our wildest dreams, but therein lies the achilles heel. Along with building NYS and building up the 'dream' through his PR, he has also built up expectation amongst the fans, most of whom are realists. We know who we are, we know our limitations, financial or otherwise, we know our history and pedigree. So theres very little that we as fans really expect, except we hope against hope. But the expectation generated by TS et al is proving to be a myth. As a result, the reality for the fans hurts.... and how. Can we blame ourselves for feeling so.
Towdlad isn't that what's happening this season, manager and several younger players all on 3 year deals to create some stability add to that new contract for frecks etc. Perhaps this is what TS has learnt that chopping and changing (people now want a 4th manager in a year) does not work. Give a manager a year, yes a year inc the January transfer window and see what happens you never know we could Finnish the year with a good side that know each other playing good football or we could be down with he same tripe. But if you don't give it a chance you'll never know.
It comes down to better players play better football - unless we buy better quality players we won't improve in this league. All the rhetoric is insignificant - AS or NW or whoever will want to bring in some quality players - for whatever reason we haven't or can't. I cannot believe that the dross we have brought in is what AS would have bought given more opportunity to spend. It's almost like TS has pressed the cash out button.
