TS has seen the meagre growth in season tickets, and I reckon he's thought, if Championship football isn't enough to persuade this town, and I'm pleading for more season tickets to extend the ground - then sod it.
Can't blame him really. If your customer base was around 9000 would you be able to compete in one of the biggest markets in Europe? - TS has thrown the towel in - that is what's wrong and it's that which is obvious. L1 here we come
Very odd. We are left with two strikers, one of them an injury prone player who is more a utility forward than a striker and the other one a promising youngster. The manager himself has acknowledged that we needed players in that position - hopefully to improve us but surely as cover at the very least. There are only free agents left now unless we plan to go to January with what we have. And on the face of it money unspent. Baffling and worrying. I will be interested to see what the explanation from the club is.
He can't use the lack of fans argument - we have increased our fan base and you attract more people by having a better product. You don't go spouting about premiership in 3 years etc - you say we are proud to have reached the championship but recognise what an enormous challenge this is for a club of our size. It's about managing the message or you just appear as some sort of bull****ter that doesn't really understand the situation.
Well that was underwhelming wasn't it? After the Barnsley debacle we had all the tough words from Stubbs about the business that needed to be done to strengthen the team and that more players than planned would be going out to make way for the new recruits. What did we get? Two players who were not involved in the game out on season long loans and whose Millers career look to be pretty much over and a 19 year old centre back coming in who will be no more than cover for what we have.
What happened? Why did our targets not come off? Did the bank of Tony put up the closed sign? Or is Stubbs happy with what he has and believes he can get them to kick on? After his Barnsley interview I can't believe it is the latter. Worryingly it has to be 1 or 2. If 1 then you have to question what pre-work that was done by Stubbs and his team and why the deals failed to materialise - were we chasing the wrong players? If 2 then that is very worrying indeed and suggests that the Chairman either has no confidence in the current boss or he has accepted that we can't compete this time out and doesn't want to throw any more money at it.
I'd like to remain optimistic and say the players Stubbs has brought in are quality signings and just need a little more time to come good but I just can't see it. It is a forlorn hope and the only certainty I can see at the moment is relegation.
Clubs can now only sign players who were not contacted to any other club prior to window closing, so really it is the definition of scraping the bottom of the barrel - but who knows, maybe Stubbs will turn up a star striker who is desperate to put himself back in the shop window.
