You think we need a striker

Spend the money on a back four.

Absolutely spot on. It's early days yet but the fact is we have scored six goals in two home games and drawn one and lost the other. Worse, the goals we have conceded have been absolute schoolboy errors. Worse still, whether you are a multi million pound signing for Wolves or a thirty seven year old journeyman for Morecambe you can get at our back four and make them look panicky. Looking at the pace and quality in the Championship it is a real worry and it needs sorting and soon.

Warnock stuck Halford in front of the back four for a reason. Stubbs will soon see the light.

Has Halford been drinking?? Abysmal doesn't begin to cover it. I called for experimentation, I got what I asked for & I've just arrived home suitably embarrassed having come to the conclusion that apart from Jerry Yates our second string is cack. Warren looked good on the ball, made a few good blocks in as he grew into the game a bit but apart from looking like Hursty, that's where the similarities end, the poor lad looked like a rabbit in headlights for the first half, Thorpe was laboured & ponderous, Smallwood struggled with being asked to make a forward pass or two, summat he's not used to, Wilson was obviously not matchfit but OMG, that first goal, Allen was poor, as was JFC, Vaulks looked tired to me, Woody was calamitous when he came on, Taylor & Forde when he came on did OK, Jerry improved when Danny Ward came on,as he can't be expected to play up front on his own, especially against a L2 side at home. All in all, a challenging watch, but give Morecambe massive credit, they definitely deserved the win.

If what you're saying Oneaday is that our back four is so poor at the moment that they need protection then sadly I think you're right. I would have thought though that the answer would be to sort the back four out, not sacrifice a midfielder to shore things up. As for Halford playing in midfield he did a specific, limited job for Warnock but he definitely doesn't represent the way forward.

Took my daughter on her annual visit to NYS tonight. After a hundred mile round trip she's announced her satisfaction after seeing 9 goals and said that I shouldn't be too concerned cos we only lost by one! Oh to have the naivity of youth! There were so many things wrong tonight that I can't be bothered to list them. However, critically, we need two CBs asap. Halford turned the clock back a year - dreadful. If Danny Ward doesn't play our attack is woefully inadequate - so we need someone of equal stature in case he gets injured. To top it all, at the catering outlet behind NS3 five minutes before half time, no food or Fosters left! The whole place was a bloody shambles tonight - but not according to my daughter!!

Absolutely gob smacked never seen anything like that in a long time Dire,
Yates looks like he will be ok as he gets experience and matures
Taylor tried to run at them get behind the defence cross balls all night
the rest was keystone cops FC. and from what i could here the goalie didnt shout for the ball put his authority on the 6 yard box him and caused some panic Woods and him had a spat or two as well
if we get any first team injuries were going to be in trouble with replacements of this calibre
its early but stubbs needs to find a way that we can play and pinch a win Warnock style
im going to Villa i hope its not a cricket score it will spoil the day out

P.S Night started bad no tickets at the turnstile had to walk on crutches and queue at the shop i was stuffed by then and i lost my Rotherham Wembley scarf too.

Cheers Chris

Not a great result, letting in 5 goals at home to anybody let alone a league 2 side is dire.

i do still think we need a striker, it's a priority. The fact that we need other players doesn't change this either - we are still assembling our team and trying to join the dots on who plays where - in reality a result of our poor preseason preparations. Couldn't go last night as live in London during week but I am going to Villa and Brighton who will be stern tests for us and a measure of how big the problem is.

This is the same back four as at the end of last season. They needed protection then and they certainly need protection now. I know some slated Mattock on Saturday but he is the only one I would play. Broadfoot & Wood have the speed and turning circle of an oil tanker. Strength & passion isn't enough if you want to prosper in this league.

We need to spend big on two decent centre backs and if that means we can't afford a striker, then so be it. Stick Halford up there and see if he can get on the end of some crosses.

The match proved how light we are as a squad. We need strength in depth.

At a minimum, we need:

1 Centre Back
1 Left Back
2 Strikers

Im with you on mattock but I cant quite agree with sacrificing a striker for 2 new CBs.

who knows why, how and what but I was upset when derbyshire and whats his face didnt sign-big lad up front (memory!). Seemed very good to me as a pair covering most of what I would want at this level with Danny ward able to do a couple of jobs in that 3.
