I think whoever gets the nod in the Tory contest must surely call a GE to check the public are behind that person going into the Brexit negotiations- e.g. How can Teresa May be the PM leading us out when she was passionate about in? Also, the whole government is pro Europe and therefore we have a pro Europe government leading a majority of anti Europe across the nation (Brexit result).
Plus Labour are a shambles at the moment so May/Leadsom might decide to strike against a weakened and skint opponent.
In my view a GE is a necessity at this point.
Well its all about who does best in front of camera, policies matter not one iota. Politics is about image... smoke and mirrors with no substance I'm afraid and the great unwashed are easily beguiled. May as well buy OK magazine if you want to know what its really about.
Not going to happen. And although I have no time for the current government neither should it. Cameron got us into this mess by guaranteeing a referendum. Why did he do that? To avoid haemorrhaging votes to UKIP at the last election. Nobody can be too surprised by the referendum result. The rise in support for UKIP should have been fair warning. The electoral system denied them seats but the referendum was a straight shootout. In effect Cameron bought himself some time in power but deferred his demise. We are where we are. We now need a period of stability. Reopening the debate with the electorate would only pour fuel on flames that are out of control. I loathe her politics but May is probably the safest pair of hands amongst the Tory candidates. For the sake of stability and In the national interest I hope she can settle things down and get on with negotiating the Brexit terms (the people voted for it so it must be done) in a measured way. No election needed - heaven knows who might get in if there was one - we need saving from ourselves at the moment.
I try to vote with a conscience so never vote Tory, they don't represent my value's in life.
Ian, you say both seem to be on the softer edge of conservatism, May the more experienced remain candidate certainly is but Leadsom is an opportunist. It's not too long ago she was very pro Europe. Have you seen her views on gay marriage and employment rights. May the best woman win as long as it's not Leadsom.
Agree about it's the wrong time for a General Election especially with the Labour Party being a shambles at the moment.

I can sort of forgive her views on gay marriage as it is based on something I understand though absolutely don't agree with.
I cannot however ever support her outside of this contest as like many Tories she is comitted to a free vote on bringing back fox funting
It's a shame as she has real fire in her for other aspects of social.justice. unfortunately like many of us she is a contradiction I couldn't support outside of the aftermath of the Brexit.
Leadsom is awful. There is something about her neo-Thatcher appearance and style that gets her off on the wrong foot for me, but I accept that is a bit irrational. To be fair to her I had a look at her history and policies. She is everything I wouldn't want our prime minister to be. She strikes me as an opportunist who claims strong beliefs founded on her Christianity but she can take a view on right and wrong to suit. A supposed belief in good charitable work but not basic social justice. A strong moral code but happy to engage in offshore tax schemes to avoid paying tax because 'tax avoidance isn't tax evasion'. Bending rules, which apparently is ok as long as you don't break them. Supposedly grounded and in touch with people, but in bed with The City. A died in the wool deep blue Tory to the right of the nasty party. May is not someone I like much about or have much in common with politically, but my instinct is that she is at least measured and essentially a safe pair of hands. The idea that May could be PM isn't a pleasant one, but the idea that Leadsom might be makes me shudder.
