I did this and its a headache. I like what I saw in Germany, it was fresh and sent a statement out that we know we're crap at the back but we will go and score more goals than you, and show you little respect. The conservative risk free football might suit the PL, but collectively still doesn't suit English players who have been extensively coached & conditioned into athletic, fast attacking football. The usual questions still arise, what do we do with Rooney, I'm not sure he and Ali can be in the same team. Its a godsend that Welbeck got injured as I think he's poor by international standards. Not sure what Sterling & Rasford bring to the table tbh, surely Carrol would have been better as he gives us something else that they don't. But hey in Roy we trust (or do we?)
I'd have liked to have seen Carroll in the squad as a alternative option for the last 15 minutes of a game where we can't break down a good defence.
He's footballs equivalent of the RAF and a bit of aerial bombardment often pays off in those games.
Very fair point Hillsborough. Witness what happened when Benteke came on for Liverpool as a last roll of the dice last night and they went route one. Defenders start falling over and clutching their faces at every opportunity and it doesn't work.
For the first time in a while I think nobody seriously thinks we've got a prayer, so get lots of pace and attacking threat in the side and have a right good go. Go with form players - Vardy, Kane, Alli surely all must start. Don't be afraid to drop Rooney.
we could have the best 11 players in the world and it wouldn't matter with that clown in charge, he would still pick others to play that he likes, play players in the wrong position and listen to that other failure at management neville. England need a habitual winner as manager, someone that has succeeded at club and international level and understands the English culture and language. They could be from Jupiter for all I care
Well I'm glad I was around in '66 to see England win the World Cup because its highly unlikely that we will win again in my lifetime. I stopped watching England games about 25 years ago and I couldn't name a single England player.
Sorry but thats all I can contribute to this thread
All you need to know Towdlad is that even at their advanced years the Keegan/Brooking link up was probably still one of Roy's selection options. There's more chance of RUFC winning the Championship next year than there is of England winning the Euros. We just don't have enough players who you could call real world class. In fact sadly I can't think of one. Maybe the keeper Joe Hart, maybe Harry Kane, but only maybe. With a bit of luck and maybe a penalty shoot out going out way for a change we might make the semi final, but don't hold your breath.
Hodgson is in deep trouble. No more friendlies left and no idea what his best eleven or best formation is. He is desperate to find a place for Rooney and to accommodate Rooney we go into the tournament with Vardy and Kane - in the only game they have ever started together - playing fifty metres apart and Ali on the left of midfield. Lots of square pegs in round holes. It is astonishing to me that Hodgson hasn't at least had a look at Vardy and Kane as an orthodox two up front. They are both better strikers than Rooney. Ali is a better attacking midfielder than Rooney. Grow a pair Roy, and pick the best players in their best positions, not your favourite players based on reputation or fear.
I agree with Smiler. Rooney might still have something to offer, but not from the start he doesn't and should be rightly down the pecking order. Portugal persisted with Luis Figo for a long time, but Luis Figo he is not.
There's only one way to go about the Euros next week & that's in true Keegan style as that's the players we have. Why ask them to do something other than what are their key strengths upon the proviso of what the opposition pose. For me it has, and does now (ok with youth players) and always will make absolutely no sense to me. Football isn't a complicated game, tell the players to go out and do what they do best and formations / systems do not matter
•Roy Hodgson is clueless, he sounds clueless, and doesnt have a clue how to play his best players.
•A final friendly game before Euro's and he's still experimenting, we looked garbage, players playing out of position.
•He should be picking players in form not players who've been injured, or favouritism! I cant see what Henderson or Lallana bring to team. And picking Rashford with no experience over the likes of Defoe or even Carroll.
•And how frustrating is it when all we do is pass it backwards and sideways?
Can players not spot the runs of our forwards? Seeing the runs of Vardy or Rooney, and ball is getting passed around defence instead.
Play the effin ball forward..Drinkwater picking out the runs of Vardy all season won them the league.
..Roy picked Henderson instead :/
His teams simply don't do enough to become more than the sum of their parts. He got the England job because he is competent. That is rarely enough to ever win anything and it's certainly dull as dish water.
And I have to agree about Rashford. He simply shouldn't be in the squad at all. If he were playing for anyone but one of the elite teams he'd be off the radar. I am somewhat upset he has been picked above seasoned pros who have paid their dues.
