Ditto, another point ahead of the evil franchise, now beat em Saturday & we won't need to worry about em again, BTW, is this THE most biased match report you've ever heard?
No Brad - we were 2nd best for the majority. We came up against a team that do exactly what we do and I think that caught us out a bit. Tonight was percentage L1 football, it was all about hitting the long balls into the corners, it wasn't pretty from both teams. We had 2 shots the entire game, 1 we scored - t'other we were very close. City on another night would have had 4 but for the best GK in the Championship. Campy made sure we got a point tonight, 4 top drawer saves in particular 1st half the 2 he made were game savers. We had full intention to break up their rhythm and pull everything in the book to make life as difficult as possible to not get beat, and it worked. Again it was far from pretty and really made for a poor quality game. But if we can avoid defeat at MK it will be a very fruitful week - we do no want to go to Hull City needing something. It must be settled before then - but this group of players are more than capable. A great point under the context.
Absolutely - a very good point, it was very important (isn't it always) we scored first. The stunts their players were pulling in the 1st half were a joke diving and allsorts - the crowd were baying for blood from the ref who didn't flinch fair play to him.
City have all the infrastructure to step up a gear in this league. I couldn't believe the difference in the ground from2 years ago & only 3 sides are used! - the stand behind the cameras towers over the rest, a 2 tier effort with boxes in the middle much akin to at Wolves or Forrest - and they'll fill it as well - it will be a massively intimidating place to go when that stand is full. They need players though, with championship cleverness. I haven't seen Rotherham in a scrap of a game like that since L2 - 2 months ago we'd have got plastered. Campy and Wood were immense, Derbs was pretty much non existent but for the goal, Frecks I don't think excelled in the fight, Mattock and Kelly stood up well, Best did what he could against a giant of a man (Flint?).
Thankfully MK have more principals of playing football & I think that suits us, however it is vital we don't get beat - that has got to be the bottom line - last game of the season for me - so hopefully it'll be a good un!
It was a battle in every sense of the word. I was sitting with their fans and boy, were they ****ed off! Halford could not have wound them up anymore if he tried (which he did, on numerous occasions ).
I thought before the game a point would be good here, and fortunately, it was the case. Overall, they were probably the better side however, it's up to them to break us down, they are the home team after all.
The band of Millers fans were in good voice and could be heard in the opposite stand clear as a bell. Talking of stand, what a stadium that is going to be! Like Ex said in an earlier post, I was also there a couple of years ago and what a rundown dump of a ground it was but, wow, it is superb now, the concourse areas under the stand are like an airport terminal. It will be one of the best grounds in the country when it's completed.
Thanks for the comments from those who went. We have to manage the fact that with NW in charge people will have a pre-conception that we are going to be physical and dirty. That includes referees. Other managers will play on that. Evans and Raynor made sure they and their players were at the ref all the time, and Johnson made pre-match comments in the media to the same effect. Leeds had two giant centre backs who took no prisoners, a niggly ball winner in midfield (Bridcutt - did anyone see the horror tackle he put in for Scotland?) and a big lump up front (Wood). They certainly mixed it when needs be. Bristol City are no different. It sounded like their centre backs were giants and Wilbrahim has been bashing centre halves around for years. It sounded like they were pretty direct with it. We got no yellows last night I think. Fortunately it seems (and Ex confirms) that the ref was wise to what was going on. Unfortunately previous refs have not been and we have got red cards based on what refs expect us to be like. When you look at those reds, Wood made two clumsy but not bad tackles, Halford was given two yellows for two fouls that weren't even fouls (certainly not the first one), Mattock was given a ridiculous second yellow seconds before full time for time wasting when the ref clearly didn't realise he had already had a first one, and Derbyshire's was rescinded. The problem is that if you get yourself a reputation it can become a self fulfilling prophecy, so it is something we need to be mindful of.
Had we watched a team play against us last night like that we'd have been screaming, every opportunity players staying down, In 30yrs of football I've never seen a player get treatment for 6 mins, stretcher out (although player walked off gingerly) then come back on again! We were certain Halfords season was over (it was opposite end so didnt see what happened). Greg seemed to be at the centre of most things the loud City crowd were booing at. Campy should have been booked for time wasting. I've a feeling that, and the ref knew this, if he'd have handed cards out early on it would have set a precedent and so much was happening goodness knows how many would have been dished out. The lads put a huge shift in though, I'm more concerned that after Saturday as well, it might just catch up on us at MK - I hope it doesn't
What a great performance. A real professional and focused team.
With this kind of mentality ; the self belief and ability to stand up tp anyone it can only bode well for the last 6 games. If no one intimidates you then you become confident and assured and nothing can get you down.
Well done NW and the lads.
Its great to have a bunch of men in the shirt that the opposition need to really worry about competing with.
