Sharapova / Meldonium

A string of Russian sports people are testing positive for use of this drug.

The reason for WADA adding it to the banned substance list was that it is performance enhancing.  It increases the rate of blood flow and oxygenisation - stamina.

I am sorry for Miss Sharapova if she has some medical condition(s) that requires her to take medication regularly.  I must say that she looks well on it.  Since she is a walking multi-million dollar a year business however, and has a team of people dedicated to her well being (including I imagine medical people) it is massively surprising to say the least that all her 'people' rely on her opening her email attachments to keep up to speed with changes in the anti-doping world.  I would have thought someone would have been on that case on her behalf.

It also surprises me that someone with a genetic disposition to diabetes would consider changing her name to Sugapova to boost sales of branded sugary confectionary.

The brave Maria showed admirable fortitude in confessing to her understandable silly mistake and agreeing to take the (hopefully a bit lenient because she has admitted it and it was all very innocent) rap.  It is a shame that her team didn't advise her better and look after her as well pre-drug test failure as they did in putting out the news of the failed test so efficiently.

Has anyone been fired yet?

I will say it although I dont know her its as fishy as a wet fish in Grimsby on Friday night.

Its yet another substance that the ever evolving world of doping has been slow to catch up with.

It seems obvious she has been taking it to enhance performance and has got caught out.

Lets be honest with each other and admit the world of sport is more bent than Arthur Daley's best deal on a 'one lady owner and its so good ive been driving it myself and cant believe im selling it' bull****.

Don't you think she is the epitome of the modern athlete? Enough talent to be one of the best few in the world but not in the 'great' category. Little or no personality. But with looks on her side (if you like that sort of thing) and a PR team behind her she doesn't have to be great to make millions of dollars. I don't like to say it, but there aren't as many characters in sport as there used to be. Perhaps we have got what we deserve. The financial stakes are so high and the public scrutiny so intense that we will inevitably get robotic performers who don't do or say anything for fear of damaging their image or upsetting their sponsors. The finances are also such that the temptation to cheat must be strong because the rewards are so great. I can't stand Sharapova myself. To me she is the embodiment of what has become boring about high end glossy sport, although she isn't alone by a long stretch. Whether she was deliberately cheating or not I don't know, but the whole episode certainly stinks to high heaven. I find her explanation very hard to believe. The nature of her press conference annoyed me more than the thought that she might have been cheating. My guess is that her carefully staged campaign will get her a much reduced ban - maybe 12 months instead of the guideline 4 years. Tennis has a tough decision. It has to clean itself up but she is very high profile and they know it as well as she does. Watch that space.

She is indeed. That's a good observation. Not many are attracted to just the will to compete. Those who have a natural and just hunger in themselves to be as good as they can and match that against others is rare due to the big money and general commercial strangle hold.

What a world it is. No longer the world of sport but the world is sport.
