The importance of the summer transfer window can't be overstated. Get it wrong and get off to a bad start and you set the tone for the whole season. By the time January arrives confidence is low, potential new players won't find you an attractive proposition and people want daft money for anybody worth having. If you haven't got daft money to spend (partly because you are having to pay a fortune to get the summer mistakes off the books) January isn't going to make a lot of difference. For those reasons Warnock and Redfearn before him have had very difficult jobs to do. And yes, Evans is largely (though not exclusively) to blame.

Evans managed us for 9 games and left us out of the relegation zone. Don't underestimate how bad Redfearn actually was.

We got 8 points in 9 games under Evans and 17 in 20 under Redfearn. Nothing in it at all points per game wise. Evans had a choice of who to bring in over the summer. Twelve of them. The vast majority not good enough. Unless someone wants to come on and wax lyrical about the contributions of Roos, Collins, White, Maguire, Buxton, Lesesma, Thorpe and Halford. Redfearn had to work with what he was left with plus whatever loans and free agents he could find because the cash tin was empty and the window was shut. Redfearn at least has an excuse. Evans doesn't. He knew he had blown it when after getting 12 in plus Camp he said we needed four more new faces. Make no mistake, it was in the summer that the damage was done and it has been difficult to repair it.

So when Warnock keeps us up with largely the same group of players that Evans signed..........
