Did anyone else see the Barca penalty goal over the weekend? Messi feigns to shoot and taps the ball a yard or two to his right for an on rushing Suarez to fire home for his hat trick. Brilliant or disrespectful and arrogant? When I was about 14 I played in a very strong junior team and will never forget a rollicking we got after a 10-0 win or something for trying lots of flicks and tricks. It stuck with me. Good as Messi and Suarez are, personally if I played for their opponents I would have taken a red card to make an impression on the pair of them. I hate to see professionals disrespecting other professionals.
FIFA could stop this instantly by making a pen a singular event. Miss in any way its a goal kick, score you go to the middle, no rebounds and if save / hit post etc play does not continue, if the ball hits keeper etc then goes its a goal, the penalty situation does not end until the ball is in full control of the gk or it stops moving. Pen taker gets 1 strike of the ball and his run up must either be constant speed or increase in speed NOT decrease.
A penalty is just the same as a kick off. A direct free kick. If a player taps the ball forward from kick off and the other forward shoots and scores he'd be a hero. For the record a player can score with the first and only kick of the game.
I realise that the goal was perfectly legal, but I still think it was unprofessional and disrespectful to the opposition. Just because something is legal doesn't mean it is ok to do it . That is my angle on it. It was not necessary wrong for Len Shackleton to sit on the ball but if he did it when I was playing against him he would have got a size 12 up his backside. You don't get down on the goal line on a walk in and head it in. Perhaps I am old school but in my book you win, you do all the right things, you win professionally, and you don't take the p out of the opposition. That is the mark of a true professional. Messi had a penalty. He should have converted it. He took a higher risk route only because they were 3 or 4 up already. You can talk of entertainment if you like, but I like watching professional sportsmen do their job as well as they can. Watching one team humiliate another like a playground bully isn't entertainment, it is uncomfortable viewing. I expect no better of Suarez, but I always thought Messi had a little bit more class about him as an individual.
what address do you want me to send the step ladders to?
To help you off your high horse
professional sports people will do what they can to win, every sport is littered with examples of match fixing, drug cheats, gamesmanship or just straight forward cheating. All those things are far worse than taking the P because you can.

That may be so derby, but that still dont make it right in my view, whatever happened to honesty. The trouble I have with your list in which you mention cheating, gamesmanship, drugs, match fixing are all the same thing - dishonesty, cheating, fraud, corruption, a World of Liars not a World of Sport. Just because it happens (and there has been no more guilty parties than in my sport of 40 years, cycling). How can we get excited about a sport that we accept is corrupt, its no longer a sport but circus.......wrestling being a prime example.
Of course the temptation is there due to the vast sums of lolly sloshing about. and human nature being what it is we can see how it happens. No excuse, still not right
Give me real sportsmanship in the true definition of the word any day and we can all cheer the champion who is a true champion not a con man. Keep your step ladders, you'll need em to get down to the lowest common denominator that those in your list reside in
An odd argument that one Derby. Because lots of players cheat really badly we shouldn't worry about sportsmanship in general? Because there are lots of bad criminals around should I not worry about the fact that good manners are on the decline? I really don't get that at all.
What about Hoilet et al diving for a free kick every ten yards, pinching 5 yards on a throw in, claiming for a corner when you kicked it out. All worse than setting a team mate up to score.
I think it's a question of sensitivity based on personal belief. When ever I have taken part in any kind of competition then I expect and respect any kind of skill on display . I enjoy solid thoughtful approaches as much as I do individual tactics and skill set and flamboyant and outrageous attempts to gain advantage and display skill and ability.
It's just a personal thing but I simply applaud and enjoy and hold my hands up in admiration for anyone who bests someone else . I've aways taken it as a personal challenge to appreciate , try to emulate or find a way to counter it.
I m not sure what there is to judge negatively here. It's a flamboyant attempt to display skill and innovation and within the rule's of the game. I think it's like what one might see down the years in terms of the way bowling in cricket evolved or the tennis serve etc. Indirect free kicks in football cam also be seen as an example , which if flicked up instead of past would allow for a direct shot on goal.
Can anyone think of other examples of utilising the rules in a sport outside the normal interpretation to allow for a different behaviour or approach?
