Did word get around that RUFC are a soft touch?

Players talk. (a player told me so)

I think it's highly likely that the a number of unscrupulous players, started hearing on the grapevine,a while ago, that if you sign for Rotherham you could negotiate a signing on fee, toss it off with a mardy attitude for a few months, get dropped into the reserves and then get sold on, with a nice wedge in the bank for your lack of effort.

I think we have been a bit of a pushover for these footballing mercenaries.

A bit of a wild suggestion, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if that was the thinking from some quarters!! But I shouldn't want to tar all players with the same brush

How would you think, knowing he has a history of binning them after 1 bad performance? I would say that statement wasn't far off the mark. Luckily we now have a manager who believes in coaching and the experience/ learning he has done by doing his FA badges

The recruitment done by Evans in the summer will go down in my mind as possibly the worst period of management in my time supporting the club (early-70's onwards). Big wages by our standards and no doubt one or two decent signing on fees on half a dozen players or more who have contributed nothing positive whatsoever to our season, and who it is going to cost us now simply to move on. In typical Evans style, he brought a dozen in and perhaps three (Grant Ward, Joe Mattock and Joe Newell) turned out to be up to the Championship (perhaps Rawson although we knew about him). I doubt they came in with the intention of playing badly. Most players love playing football and winning. They just weren't/aren't good enough players. Evans had a big opportunity to strengthen a decent squad and he absolutely blew the budget then did a runner whilst telling everyone how good he is and that he left us with a mid-table squad. If Redfearn keeps us up it will be the equivalent of a Houdini act.

far fetched from my perspective.

To accomplish this Machiavellian marvel there are significant amount of assumptions that need to be fulfilled:

1. The player has to be motivated to not want to play for a season.
2. admit his career is on a very bad decline
3. Risk that the club will be willing to settle favourably
4. Be prepared to take a lower wage for the rest of their career
5. Be fairly stupid and have an even denser agent who when they do the math might realise the medium term income is possibly going to be seriously reduced.
6. Actually not want to play football, have no desire, ambition or pure joy or sense of accomplishment, and have no ego whatsoever while being prepared to watch their fitness decline and risk getting depressed.

Smiler, nice to know I am not alone on my opinion of Mr Integrity's leaving, I'm also suspicious he already had the Leeds job lined up before he blew  hmm

I reckon that's a very good pen portrait of at least 4 of our current squad, apart the not having an ego, bit.

I don't know exactly why he left Towdlad, but I have always wondered if 'moving in a different direction' really meant that Evans wanted more money to shore up the team after he realised he was in trouble with what he had, and TS wouldn't provide it or simply didn't have it to give without endangering us.  He did get twelve in and then say he needed four or five new additions six games later!  Just a theory.  I guess we will never really know.  It is my opinion however that he did a terrible job pre-season and left us in the sticky stuff.  The wins against ten man Cardiff and a knackered Birmingham didn't paper over the cracks for me.  It will be interesting to see what Evans does with any money they give him at Leeds from the sale of the youngsters that Redfearn brought through.  The irony of it!  Redfearn seems to have picked up the dirty end of a stick left for him by Evans, and Evans is now benefitting from Redfearn's good work.  I wouldn't blame Redfearn for loathing him.

It seems to follow a pattern from one club to another Smiler. Its my view that he does ok, in his fashion, until the novelty wears of and he is found out, by which time the budget has gone. Having run out of ideas and cash to try to buy himself out of trouble, off he goes leaving a mess to be cleared up by someone else with his glowing CV still intact.

I am reminded of the Anton Johnson days when he threw money about like a man with no arms, while we cheered and chanted his name in the belief he was spending his own money. Turns out he was a man of straw and had drained every last penny out of the club.
