A lot has been said about Becchios age, over the hill etc etc, but much can be said for drive, vision and skill, matched against his positive influence on the younger players.
I would just mention old men at the end of their careers who have had significant impact with the Millers:
Rod Fern languishing in the reserves until Porterfield brought him back into the first team at the age of 34 the rest is what legends are made of, linked to that period is Vic Hallom who helped to marshal a failing side into a squad of players who turned round a relegation bound outfit to finish in a position of safety which also formed the bulk of the great 80/81 3 Division Champions side. Emlyn Hughes soon followed, already a legend when he came. and more recently Mark Robins a regular goal scorer for us and a delight to watch with his balance and poise on the ball, was in footballing years over the hill when playing with us.
So I see no reason why Becchio cant make a significant impact too and to all those who regard him as past it I say lets wait and see, I'm pleased we've got him.
It will be interesting to see what he can bring, what is certain is that he can't do worse can he, as much as people knocked Revs he was focal point and made thing stick to allow the likes of Agard, Tavs, Dickho Wes Thomas, Frecks etc to thrive in the positions they can hurt teams. Between Becchio and Best I really think it will make the difference, both Wards, Frecks, Newell and JCH can play to their strengths. There are goals in the team if we find the right formula. I'm not sure about the comparison with old heads though, the game is an athletes game these days, past craftsmen have been driven out of the game. When you see players like Messi and Ronaldo lauded it makes you laugh when they aren't fit to lace the likes of Bergkamp, Cantona, Zidane, Gullit, Van Basten, Klinsmann, Cruyfs etc boots
Phewe! Messi n Ronaldo not craftsmen? Surely you jest young man. Ronaldo is Deffo an athlete but he is a he'll of a craftsmen too. Messi could use his touch well into his 90s I reckon.
Good points re team. I was impressed with becchio and really thought he was the missing link for easy survival last season.
His presence on the pitch is outstanding.. he will bring charisma to the boys. I expect he will be a big influence. Stay fit and eager is what we need, the rest is pure gold.
