MILLERS BANTER PREDICTION LEAGUE FIXTURES( NO 16)

...............we are back.

Results from Week 15 are still pending but we have no time to lose as week 16 is upon us. Its a commuters world. Time stands still for no man, so the saying goes, suggesting a frantic grasping of time-as if time were partial to our frantic search for meaning. still ,there is no doubt the world is more competitive, powerful and based on individuality than ever before.

Anyone remember a time when Buses were full to bursting, and cars ran around with heating and a stereo-only on the delux models which only the most educated and wealthy could afford. A time when most had to decide between a home and a car and many more could afford neither.

Hey! what about that music on the buses in the 80s. what was that about?

Flashy dan's and peter perfects were few and far between as most believed in solidarity and community. Men and women went to work together and came home together often via some togetherness at the social or political club. Not anymore. Gone are steady eddies and shrewd Harold's and simple simon's. Now we have speed, power and rights. Everyone has a right!

A similar trend occurred in Football. It became fashionable to shut up shop and park the bus in the 80s and 90s and no one did it better than the Italians. Of course, their tanks only went backwards so its hardly surprising they always trailed behind the demolition of the Germans to reach Final after Final without doing very much attacking at all.

Our older viewers will remember Football in the decades before as open, attacking and full of defensive frailties and lots and ots of goals.

What about now and what about Football in the second tear of English football in 2015.

Attacking? Fluid? Long ball? Defensively sound? Played with width or narrow? Fast or slow? Technical or brave heart?

No one can deny that the size, strength and power of today's championship footballer is equivalent to 1 million years of natural evolution but are they any better as an attacking force or has it been cancelled out by more evolution in defensive ability?

What then!  would one would expect to see more or less goals compared to previous era's?

so, before you scroll down think about what you would answer to the following question;

1964-65 SEASON: HOW MANY GOALS WERE SCORED IN THE SECOND TIER OF ENGLISH FOOTBALL ON THE 7TH November 1964?  I WILL GIVE YOU A CLUE. LAST WEEKS league FIXTURES TOTALLED 18.

 The startling answer is...

The answer is 37.

» Results on Saturday 7th November 1964

Bolton Wanderers3-1Derby County
Cardiff City2-1Charlton Athletic
Coventry City1-1Leyton Orient
Huddersfield Town0-2Bury
Ipswich Town7-0Portsmouth
Middlesbrough4-0Swansea City
Newcastle United3-1Rotherham United
Northampton Town0-0Norwich City
Plymouth Argyle2-1Swindon Town
Preston North End2-5Manchester City
Southampton0-1Crystal Palace

So, are we going to park the bus this same day on November 7th 2015, or, are we going to increase our attacking power to such an extent that defense will always fall to attack?

For a vintage 20 points simple predict whether that away teams of November 7th 2015 will score more goals than the away teams of 51 years ago (see above) AND, whether the away Teams of 2015 will score more than the home teams of 2015. Now that's a surprise isnt it!

well, well well...

I have been a little flat this last week and with another week still to go until the Millers play again all hope is easy to abandon.

Then there's the Millers BANTER prediction league. Unlike the millers where we all bleed together and smile in unison the prediction league is like a wild night out. After the dust has settled and the lights are on and straddlers exit the club, the scene resembles year 5 after an apocalypse. There is the sad git still down on his luck, the girl thats never been kissed fumbles in her bag and the psycho-***** is screaming in the corner with cheap blue mascara settled on her pasty cheek like a watercolour impressionist masterpiece. The bounces hang like hyenas looking for easy prey and the bar staff look on wondering if its worth completing their university studies even though they see the **** of a life wasted at the end of every night.

Millers banter is like this.

Those that have left earlier generally live another life of comfort, friends and plans, though of course, the odd one or two will have long returned home after another defeat in the face of such dashing men and women surrounding them all night and confirming what the mirror suggested to them before they stepped out into an alien world.

So, it was in this mood I approached week 16 of Millers Banter prediction league. For me personally its all going wrong. Yes,I Had been top for 3 more weeks but I have been bottom or in the bottom few for the last 2 weeks and not fairing well for a few before then. I noticed others were coming into form and some strong performers were getting stronger...I was down and worried. What was your mood and thoughts coming into week 16?

So, as usual, I start at the top of the predictions and work down. 43! Oh, I thought, I got 43. Distinctly average-probably be about 2 or third worse I thought... well, I learnt a lesson, the same lesson I have learnt before many times: Dont judge a book by its cover; A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush; dont count all your chickens...; the tortoise and the hare...I could go on.

In terms of the Bonus no one got both right. Quite remarkable Id say. Indeed, only 7 teams; from 15 in total=30 guesses (erm, I beg your pardon) were correct.

Here are the scores with one result to come on friday next.

Ian-53 (10 bonus)
Glass half full-53 (10 bonus)
One a day-47 (10 Bonus)
The Loan Arranger-46 (10 bonus)
Millmoor Magic-39 (10 Bonus)
Tony Kidding-37
Sickly Child-34 (10 Bonus)
Ridgeway Kid Howlers-25 (welcome sir)
Nez-25
Andy Monium-25 (10 Bonus)
Exeter-23
Smiler-21
Worcester Miller-20
S8-20
Unifier-19

I will update the table this weekend, and as always please let me know if you think Ive erred.
