Tend to agree. It seems a little arbitrary at times.

One would think there is a team brief and some sort of collective decision making each month.

I remember being impressed with him when he played out wide for us.  It was round about the time Docherty was manager I think - certainly late sixties anyway.

Thats right the Doc signed him , allegedly on big bonus for scoring, he scored one when millers were two up the Doc jumped up to celebrate but Eric and Lewis Purshouse (millers chairman and vice ) jumped up appealing for offside, don't know how true this is but found it funny st time, apparently the Doc used it in his after dinner stories . Also read in book about Bill Shankly he once referred to the Purshouser's as the most honest men in football

 fascinating.

I was brought up in the era when the Purshousers were being hounded and criticised for lack of will and ambition and generally being uncommunicative and above it all.

I remebber thinking, as a very young boy, that if oonly we could get rid of them the club would have a bright new modern future.

Very hilarious when I think about it and very ironic indeed.

Thanks for bringing back that memory-how odd, when we remember things with such pathos

Fabulous tale about the celebration/offside appeal Len and also the Shanks anecdote. I know an ex-Millers player who told me about dealing with the Purshouse family.  He had a decent first year as a pro and bulled up by an experienced player at the club went into a meeting with the chairman fully intending to come out with a much improved deal. The meeting lasted about ten seconds and went like this: 'Well done lad. It'll be same as last year'. Reply: 'Yes, thank you'. As a young player he was totally intimidated but he remembers the Purshouses with nothing but fondness as being careful but straight down the middle. The game has changed a lot.  I can't imagine that conversation happening these days!  Not that I'm suggesting that anyone at the club isn't straight  (in case any lawyers are reading).
