I'm in the minority, but yesterday showed promise...

in my opinion.

I know we conceded four goals again (and at least two poor ones) but for the first time this season, we actually played a bit of positive football.

One of the changes was forced (we wouldn't ordinarily play Newell at fullback if Mattock could remain fit), but Grant Ward in for Maguire and JCH in for Bowery suggested we weren't going to setup to be defensive fodder for a talented opposition side.

And that's very much how it turned out to be. Being a bit more positive in the way we setup allowed a bit of respite for the defence and goalkeeper who were coping well in the first half. In fact, in that first half we were the better side. It was hard to see Derbyshire's near miss from the opposite end of the ground so I'd assumed it was more difficult than it looked or the defender had done well to put him off, but having seen it again this morning, he needs to be burying that. Austin (a bit of an unfair comparison, probably) would have scored that, and I'd suggest most other teams' main strikers in this division would've done. JCH also missed a very good chance second half that, again, we need to be taking. However, JCH took his goal well and Thorpe scoring could help his confidence.

As for the goals conceded, well some of them were really poor. The first goal was a well taken goal, but before the break, instead of playing to the whistle, Ladesma was too busy being pre-occupied with moaning at the ref in that annoying way many Argentinians do, and having ran to the ref, the player he was marking escaped him, bombed on about 60 yards and before you know it, we're 1-0 down. The goal was good though, and it very much reminded me of Agard's goal at home to Brentford in our promotion season. The second goal was a good break but Thorpe looked incredibly slow tracking and, with the benefit of hindsight, should've probably taken a booking and wiped him out. The third was just another unexplainable howler from the keeper which was a basic piece of goalkeeping but having said that, Halford might as well not have existed given his pathetically hapless attempt to close the shot. The fourth is purely and simply a desperate dive which that idiot referee bought, but Frecklington's been around long enough to not give him the fuel as that big lump was going nowhere. So some very poor goals conceded in there.

I do get the feeling, though, that if we bring in Adam Collin (for lots of reasons, but let's be honest, it's now time), work on the defence as a priority in training (knowing a long way ahead of next week who those four will be, injuries permitting) and keep the same balance to the side as Saturday, we have a good chance of beating Fulham and other lowly opposition at this level. All is not lost, but we need a win soon, as we're not a strong enough squad to be trying to play catchup.

The main positives for me are:-

1) When we setup as a team not so negative, we are creating chances.

2) We scored two goals from open play against a top half team.

3) It was entertaining for the first time this season.

And the negatives?

1) The keeper looks a liability and I don't see it getting better with his shattered confidence. That's resonating on the defence and we look calamitous.

2) Our heads go down when we concede and we look so susceptible to concede further.

3) We sorely miss the Holy Trinity players from yester-year (Arnie, Morgan, Pringle).

I did see enough yesterday, that, if we get a win under our belt soon, we will compete. We still might not stay up, but the outlook would look less bleak than the down-by-Christmas negative stuff we've been served up prior to yesterday.

Player ratings for me:-

Roos 5 - might have scraped a 6 had he not majory ballsed up a simple soft shot at him, but even so his indecisiveness mixed with erratic charging out clearly makes the defence uneasy and find it hard to trust/read him. Absolutely no excuses for the third goal, and we can't afford to keep carrying him like we are. I wanted to give him a chance, but for me we need to get Collin back in as I can't see it stopping. We leaked four from about 6 shots on goal. Even disregarding the clangers, could he save more than he does?

Buxton 6.5 - had a more difficult time than usual but against stronger opposition than he's come across. Very level-headed, intelligent fullback that defends well. Looks a good buy if he can stay fit. If he trusted the centre-backs more, h'd have more license to get forward which he is quite capable of.

Newell 7 - very assured again and looks so good bombing on. The kind of signing we should be making. Young, quick, good feet and bucket loads of energy and potential.

Collins 5 - just don't rate him. This is supposed to be our experienced guy at the back. He doesn't shout and organise the other players, he hasn't the legs to track his runners, is prone to grab the shirt of the strikers and doesn't command headers powerfully enough for a defender. Not the signing we should've made in my eyes.

Halford 5.5 - Slightly better than Collins but not much. Criminally bad defending for the third goal as he just laid down and let Austin turn him. Throw-ins are very handy though (even with a tight touchline hampering his run-up) and actually played a few good balls in the attacking half, but again, doesn't track his runners. Any of about 4 QPR players could've tucked in the second goal.

Ladesma 5.5 - not inflential enough and pretty wasteful with the ball. Still strikes me of someone that could offer more and in his defence, he did support Newell well in his defensive duties which aren't really his forte. Still think he's got something if we can mould him into something useful. At the moment he's neither a wide player nor a central player nor a creative force. We need to establish a role for him and tell him what he should and shouldn't be doing as he seems to be a bit like a schoolboy chasing the ball around at times.

Smallwood 5 - not on song at the moment and isn't doing what he was so good at last season. But I do think, if you whip out the easy ball for him (which was so often out to Pringle's feet) he is massively exposed as he isn't a ball-player so at the moment with little outlet he looks like a pub player. Think he'll get better once we get more of a settled, established side around him and he'll grow as the season goes on. So infuriating when he can't play balls that Sunday league players could play, though.

Ward 6 - thought he showed promise, and much more than against MK Dons. Imposed himself on the game much than his debut, passed and moved, tracked back well, strong in the tackle and has bite which a lot of this team sadly lack. However, gave the ball away cheaply at times, made some naive decisions you'd expect from a player with little first-team experience and tired badly in the second half. But with more game time, I think he could be a really useful player on that performance.

Frecklington 5.5 - another one not on song. Peterborough fans think he can't be effective at Championship level. Do they have a point or is this just another bad run of form? Improved strangely as the game went on and is an intelligent player; the through ball for JCH's goal was very slick, but needs to improve to keep his place.

JCH 7.5 MOTM - what can you say? At any level of football, defenders are terrified of pace and this lad has frightening pace. The turn to setup Derbyshire for his sitter was sublime and he managed to make 3/4 yards on the defender in a 15 yard sprint. Incredible turn of speed, made himself a nuisance aerially and on the deck, had to run the channels with some truly shoddy balls to him and continued to work and took his goal well. I've taken 0.5 for him for missing that chance in the second half.

Derbyshire 6 - good all round play, neat and tidy and always poses a threat even when not in the game as he possesses quality. However, another good chance missed (is he a striker that needs 4 good chances to score?) and he needs to be scoring them. Felt sorry for him, as everyone seemed perplexed at the tactic of lumping it long to him to watch the man mountain Onuoha eat him alive. Bizarre tactic.

Maguire was terrible when he came on and Thorpe did ok in his not very natural position.

All in all though, much more positive than the first three games, though we do need a lot of fine tuning to make this work.

I agree for the first half it looked good, even used the width of a very narrow Loftus Road.

Newall is the shining light at the moment, he made some good runs yesterday and is delight to watch on the ball.

The 2nd half they changed formation and we couldnt cope, but there is hope within the team. Its just taking a bit longer to gel,

The gap is widening with rest of us above, so Fulham is a must win, as dont want to go thru August without a win.

PMA is what we need, confidence has to come from the top though, hence the careful words from SE after yesterdays result.

We work hard, but need a target man up front, and i dont know who we could get or afford. Maybe the loan market is our saviour yet again, Bowery out on loan to a LG1 outfit local and then see what happens, JCH looked good and i was wrong about his fitness on Tuesday night, he stayed the course yesterday.

So win Tuesday night, Then get Man Utd at Old Trafford/Arsenal next round, on TV as well, then we might have some money to fund loan moves for a better calibre player who needs game time.

Keep the faith, UTM.

The overall trajectory of the team seems to be going up and improving in togetherness-they are starting to recognise each other now.

The match yesterday.

It was better viewing by and large because we pressed the play much more than in recent times.

Width:

We put many short to medium length balls down our left and had the midfield and the 2 strikers supporting it creating a real maelstrom of bodies which made it difficult for QPR to break using the pace and ability to create space with fine passing. The pace they had all over the pitch had to be contained and we did that first half by putting all our troops down the left flank. Of course, the formation and tactics of QPR-get the ball wide and have 4 attacking players to recieve the ball- played into our hands here and Evans can be applauded for winning this one first half. If Derbyshire and JCH had better control (derbs needs to think 'stay up on feet' then I really think we created 3 very good chances to score from wide left).

Its therefore obvious we play to our strength and their weakness, or at least play to our strength and their inability to use their strength. The right side is neglected for most of the game and then becomes devoid of quality cover when needed. But, in the first half this cancelled itself out as as QPR couldnt get the ball into space to sweep the ball right and put too much pressure on us.

Ledesma

Its at this point he is worth a mention. He was largely anonymous but did show desire to track back and support the attack. The issue seemed to be that he was never really brought into play. He was always in an awkward cold spot, being either bypassed by the longer ball or pushed to wide to make any telling contribution due to his lack of pace and natural tendency to want to come inside direct to goal. We wont see the best of him unless we have tactics that suit the central space he needs to showcase, and with our weakness it might never happen.

JCH.

Today convinced me he could be a huge player for us and in a quality squad he could be a match winner. His sheer pace and strength gets him by and combined with a decent brain he looks like he does have the ability at this level. He is deffo very raw however and we need to be giving the ball to him more with a little grass to burn in front of him and good things are bound to happen. Yesterday, we didnt do this more than a couple of times but when we did draw QPR out (lol) and manage to keep a presence in their half he looked very frightening indeed. His goal and overall ability caught my eye today as I did not think he possessed the brain.

Defence.

Heres the bottom line, Roo's has cost us big time, yet, he remains arguably the better of our two goal keepers and I dont think SE has finished with him yet. Today the nerves were less obvious and his distribution and reading of the game improved. He made a good save and came out of his net a couple of times to cover clear chances. His game management was vastly improved. On the downside was the goal and one time when he had to be screamed at to collect the ball, which he clearly should have anticipated.

Collin wont be good enough to keep us up and Roo's is taking too long at this time in his career to gamble much longer on. We need to go and get another, and another and another until we find one.

Halford and collins

Dont really work well together at present. Both lack aggression but both are better footballers than morgan. Halford is simply not disciplined and leaves collins exposed to a marked degree at times. I was really worried when we signed Halford because he does not fit in anywhere. I just dont know where this guy is going to play as the season goes on.

Grant ward.

Great pace and aggression. Needs to develop his passing and intelligence.

Buxton did well. I like him more each game. doesnt do much wrong and sticks well to his task. Can link up and can beat a man. He is good enough to hold down his place but ultimately nowhere near a top half championship performer.

Thorpe.

I really liked his second half performance after coming on for the injured smallwood. He sat a little deeper on more occasions than smallwood and tended to drift out wide. He has good control and an eye for a pass. He looks every inch a quality player. Defensively he doesnt have the pace from that part of the pitch and he is not the mobile type. However, his ball control and ability to pass the ball is something we need. I would personally work hard to try and fit this guy in somewhere but again due to the other issues in our team it wont be easy.

Second half.

The play is inevitable more open and thats just the mentality of football and as the away side and the weaker side we have to combat that. Lets be honest, QPR are a very good side. They have pace and huge amounts of skill on the ball. They control and pass and move several times above our level and thats that.

They got the ball out into the park quicker and used the space it created-by draggin our players in- to wing it wide again-draggin ur players out-only to use their superior skill to find space. That in essence is how they won.

Derbyshire

He huffs and he puffs but he is simple not getting any space and he does a dam fine job with what he often has to do. He does need more support in the box-poor lad-but that means finding another quality attacker (with or without height). JCH might be able to do that but it depends on the ball he gets as he simple is not a creative striker.

Newall

quality and wasted unless we get him forward. The team needs mattock fit and support from centre left midfield then we are in business. Im not sure aidy white can do this as well as Danny ward.

Frecks

He gets his preferred position and I guess that shows the issue we have. He has vision and he is ok both in attack and defence. His ball control is reasonable and he likes to drive forward, but, he is just not effective. We need someone to be pushing him for his place and using frecks as an analogy, until we can see a player who takes his crown we will continue to struggle in the middle of the park against teams that pass and move (pretty much all of them).

Overall we have got some strengths and JCH is potentially our man for this season. Bring him into the play and he will reward us.

Fans

Appreciated the performance and their was no grumbling but instead applause as the team left the pitch.

Favorite chant

Hes got no ligaments.

QPR

Have enough for a top 6 but if they lose Austin they lose 25 goals.

Just watched the whole thing on Player.

Still a L1 team, with L1 tactics and we carry that on and we will go down. Every single kick from Roos goes down their right side and 9 times out of 10 it comes straight back. That is management, zilch imagination and zilch variation. Those lads are clearly working from a script and given no license to think for themselves, playing percentage long balls that we invariably do not win. It's fine to exploit and target weakness, but every single god given time? Its so blinkered its unreal. There are no triangles, the movement up top is diabolical and the ability for it to stick even worse. How on earth Derbyshire misses that in the 1st half is beyond me. How he can call himself, and how people think he's a striker is beyond me. Roos made a couple of saves you'd expect of someone on 10k a week, but his error for the 3rd is laughable. From the outside in, we are playing panic football, it doesn't have purpose and why is that? Because they are all sh*t scared of stepping a foot wrong or out of line. If you want a team of robots go to Japan, they're cheaper to buy and don't cost wages.

The 'credit' post I retract, on yesterdays evidence we've learned nothing, progressed nowhere and its the same old but with technically better players told to toe the party line. When we start playing like , and having the ideals of a championship team maybe we can start talking about mid table. From that yesterday we are so far away from it, it makes the mid table talk look stupid. We spend so much time running around like chickens is there any wonder we concede late goals in a half, even a super pumped Warney would get knackered, where's the patience, where's the ball work? If that's what the UEFA badges educate you I'm quitting right now.

I put a youtube up earlier in the week of the lads against Chester years ago, in the old 3rd now L1, just look at the difference in quality its quite eye opening
