Lets be honest the biggest 2 transfers in our history have failed and both are Steve Evans signings. I know I say I quite like Bowery and I do but he has to improve a lot to be a success. He also agreed to spend £800k on Stevie May and what a disaster that could have been, if I remember didn't we spend nearly £200k on a winger that never played as well.
So perhaps the reason we won't gamble some larger transfers is TS doesn't trust Evans on the big deals and plays the % game on free or low cost deals.
t71 then we will struggle we have to speculate a little also last year the club stated it was willing to spend £1m on the right player, our finances supposedly were better than expected so what has changed
its just impossible to know without being in Tony's wallet.
We have made an overall profit (as it were) over the last 3 seasons, so its possible to say we have a few million leeway in terms of fair play- more now the rules have been relaxed. However, TS and the club might not be able to write a few million off, which would be needed to keep the club afloat.
so, unless the club is comfortable with that kind of risk it means we cant spend the needed million pounds once or twice coupled with the higher weekly wage such a player would be on.
I do think its clear we are about on the brink of our budget with no cash reserves in Tony's pocket.
Remember that all the current TV money and sponsorship is included in our budget for this season, so unless a major new source of income comes in it is as it was last year within a few hundred k...and clearly this years players will be earning more than last years.
So what then?
spend 2 million on 2 better than average players, but still a risk and carry the debt and its impact over the next few years and have to sustain that year on year until it goes pop or the miracle happens; or, stay close to budget while we increase revenue a little each year, (TS has done this quite successfully thus far) and hope to stay in the championship for a long time and become a much bigger club than we have been the last 45 years.
